Kindergarten students are learning how to draw fish! Ms. White uses the projector to demonstrate one strategy to create the fish. She always ends her directions with encouraging the students "you do you". All students are engaged in this creative learning, and really pleased with the creation they make.
Students often use hands on materials to help facilitate understanding of complex mathematical strategies. Another great learning tool to reinforce understanding of concepts is playing math games! Kids enjoy working with peers, solving mathematical problems in a friendly, competitive or collaborative way. Most times, the game players forget that they are doing "work" and just enjoy the play process with their peer.
Most teachers incorporate a brief quiet time in their daily classroom routines. Students can draw, play playdough, read or just "chillax". Having 5 minutes of serenity to collect thoughts and let the brain recharge is such a positive experience for students and staff alike.
Writing happens in so many ways at our school. First graders are busy researching and recording their learnings. Second graders here are doing a math inquiry with written recording of information. This is a fabulous engaging mathematical, social and writing activity.
