Welcome to February! February is a short month with a lot of exciting dates! It includes the 100th day of school, Presidents Day and Valentines day. Please be on the lookout for information regarding these days. We are also in the third nine weeks of school. The students will continue learning to apply letter/sound knowledge to read words and we will also assess the students on sight words this nine weeks. A list was sent home with the January study guide but your child's teacher will send another. We are working on them in class and we'd like you to start working on them at home as well. Continue to use the study guide for enrichment ideas. Remember that we go outside when the temperature is above 40 degrees. Feel free to come in and check out the lost and found if you're missing a coat. Thank you for all of your support!
First Grade
February is here and it is going to be a busy one for 1st grade!
In Reading wil will continue to work on ask and answer questions and identifying fiction and nonfiction books. For Math we will start grouping collections of items and identifying the place value with tens and ones by writing the number correctly. In Social Studies we will have fun learning about President’s Day along with some famous Virginians such as Maggie Walker, Douglas Wilder, John Mercer Langton, and Arthur Ashe. In Science we will learn all about animals. We also will be celebrating the 100th day of school. Please remember to work on your homework and fluency books nightly.
Second Grade
Third Grade
Your third graders just finished learning about Ancient China and are beginning to learn about Ecosystems in Science. In Math, they are learning about Perimeter/Area and then will move on to Time. In Reading and Writing, students continue to spiral over essential skills. Please utilize Scholastic, I-Ready Reading, and I-Ready Math, reading nightly! Thank you!
Fourth Grade
Hello Families, We are halfway through the year and so excited for all the learning opportunities that are coming up! Math: In math we will be continuing to work with fractions with a focus on addition/subtraction and word problems. We will also transition in probability and dive into math patterns. Please continue to have your child practice their multiplication facts at home. Reading/Writing: In reading, students will continue to practice cause/effect, identifying main ideas, and will work to compare/contrast details of different texts. Students would benefit from you asking them comprehension questions after they complete their reading. Such questions can be about what they just read, unfamiliar words or even having them draw conclusions about what might happen next or how the characters are feeling. In writing, students will begin their research paper unit. Some topics that will also be covered include- utilizing reliable sources, citing sources, avoiding plagiarism and organization of information obtained. Science: In science, we are diving into learning about the ocean floor and the interactions of organisms within the ocean. Social Studies: In our Virginia Studies class, we will be learning and discussing various topics of the civil war. We look forward to challenging your student this month and as always, we appreciate your support at home. -4th Grade Team

Guidance Updates
The character trait for our February Students of the Month is ̈Kindness ̈ and the focus of
classroom guidance lessons will be Kindness/Friendship. I will be visiting classrooms to
reinforce the importance of being kind to others, and to review the qualities of a good friend.
School counseling lessons will be based on the book ̈Have You Filled a Bucket Today? ̈ by
Carol McCloud. This book teaches that everyone has an ̈invisible bucket ̈ that can be filled by
kind words or actions from others. Students will learn the importance of being ̈bucket fillers ̈,
doing or saying kind things instead of ̈bucket dippers ̈ saying or doing unkind things to hurt
others.
February 11-17 is Virginia Kindness Week. Students are invited to participate in a kindness
challenge to earn a spot on the ̈Kindness Wall of Fame ̈. Students will be given a worksheet
titled, “I Can Show Kindness! ̈ with examples of acts of kindness to complete. The challenge is
for students to complete at least 10 acts of kindness and color them in (grades ES-2) or
draw/write in what kind act they did (grades 3-5). Once your child has completed his/her 10
acts of kindness and filled out the worksheet, please have them return it to Mrs. Pittman, School
Counselor, by February 20th.
Please contact Mrs. Pittman, NPES School Counselor at (757) 923-4167 or via email at
chandapittman@spsk12.net with any questions or if you need assistance with your child's
academic or personal/social needs.
