Remember school begins at 8:15 a.m. on Tuesday, September 8th and ends at 3:15 p.m. Be sure to join your child's Google Meet. If you are not sure how to locate it, please reach out to your child's teacher.

Preparing for a successful first day of school on Tuesday, September 8

Because we’re starting the school year learning from home, please share the following steps with your families, friends, and communities so we can ensure every student is connected and ready to learn from day one.

1. Please help us ensure that every student has a device. Students will need a device that connects to the internet in order to learn from home, and CPS has committed to providing a device to every student who needs one.

2. Help us connect families to the internet. Please spread the word about Chicago Connected. Families can receive up to four years of internet service at no cost. Families can check their eligibility and explore other affordable internet service options at cps.edu/getconnected.

3. Please ensure students can log in successfully before the first day of school. If a student does not have a CPS username and password, please share these account set up instructions with them or their family.

4. Attendance will be taken. Please remind families that their child will need to log in to cps.edu/portal with their CPS username and password every day. Although we’re learning at home, students’ schedules should mirror a normal school day.

Protecting our students’ privacy during online learning

In addition to ensuring our students have the tools they need to successfully learn from home, CPS is committed to doing everything we can to protect the online privacy and safety of our school communities during remote learning.

Guests and outside visitors are prohibited from joining virtual classes.

It is important to remember that during remote learning, students and teachers will be bringing a virtual classroom into the privacy of their home or living situation. It is our collective responsibility to respect and protect each other’s privacy and any personal or sensitive information we may learn through a virtual classroom. Therefore, the district is prohibiting any outside visitors from participating in or observing a virtual classroom unless legally required or consent has been obtained.

Teachers should remind students and families that everyone must respect each other’s privacy as much as possible during remote learning.

An update on child supervision during school hours

Last week, CPS and the City of Chicago surveyed families to understand who may need help this fall finding a safe space for their child during traditional school hours. After reviewing survey results, we reached out to eligible families to register for a seat at one of the six sites that will be available beginning the first day of school. All supervision sites will provide children under 14 years of age with the ability to participate in their school’s remote learning program from a safe space that follows the City of Chicago’s Be Safe: PK-12 Education Guidelines. In the coming weeks, as part of a larger city initiative that is being developed, we are planning on adding more supervision sites to meet the needs of our families, and we will share additional information as soon as possible. Families who need assistance with childcare can find additional resources on the Chicago Early Learning site.

We are incredibly grateful for your continued support as we get ready for a first day unlike any other. While there will be challenges, we know that our students’ resilience, hard work, and determination will lead to great things this year. • PAC – Parent Advisory Council - CPS has formed NCLB Title I Parent Advisory Councils (PAC) at the local school level.
• PACs exist to provide parents/legal guardians, teachers/staff, and concerned community individuals with the opportunity to work with their principal in the planning, design, implementation, and evaluation of the Title I Program.
• BAC – Bilingual Advisory Council - Every school implementing a state-mandated Transitional Bilingual Education (TBE) Program is required to form a Bilingual Advisory Committee (BAC), according to the Chicago School Reform Act. It is also recommended that schools implementing a Transitional Program of Instruction (TPI)

Lexia® Core5® Reading is a fun, computer-based program that has helped millions of students improve their literacy skills. The activities in Core5 support and build on classroom curriculum and focus on developing reading skills in six areas: phonological awareness, phonics, structural analysis, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

Teachers will be providing passwords for students (Grades PK-5). Ms. Laura Nunn, our MTSS coordinator, supports the implementation of Lexia.

IXL covers K-12 math and language arts and features fun, interactive skills that motivate students to master concepts, and actionable insights help teachers differentiate instruction and support success for every learner.
