7th Grade Teacher Spotlight
Ms. Mattis is not only in her third school year as a teacher, she is a K-12 Upper Darby Alumni! Ms. Mattis went to Hillcrest, Drexel Hill Middle School and Upper Darby High School. Ms. Mattis is actually teaching 7th grade math in her own 7th grade math classroom! After Ms. Mattis graduated from UDHS, she went to Widener University where she earned her Bachelor's degree. Shortly after she
went to the University of Pittsburgh and earned her Master's Degree. Ms. Mattis still lives locally in Delco with her husband and son and coaches softball in the Drexel Hill community! They enjoy going to the zoo, spending time with their families and watching all Philadelphia sports teams! Ms. Mattis has three dogs, Iris (a Brittany spaniel), Otter (a chocolate lab) and Hera (a German Shepard). Despite being a die-hard Taylor Swift fan, Ms. Mattis did not make it to the Era's Tour this summer but being a WWE Fan, she will be attending WrestleMania this spring!

First Graders Learn Problem Solving Skills
STEM is an acronym that stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The focus is hands on, problem based learning. STEM creates critical thinkers, increases science literacy and enables the next generation of innovators. Innovation leads to new products and processes that sustain and improve our economy and world! Mrs. Karsh's first grade students were introduced to STEM learning and really enjoyed the challenge.
Kindness Counts
During the month of September Mrs. Thomas, our School Counselor, taught classroom lessons focusing on kindness. Every student at Garrettford recited our kindness pledge, and was given an opportunity to create a kindness link with their name on it. Our links were attached to create a school-wide kindness chain. The chain is on display in our main hallway, and will remain up for the rest of the year as a reminder that every student plays an important part at Garrettford. If one link breaks, our entire chain is broken - just like if one person is not kind to another that hurts our entire school community. Please encourage your child(ren) to spread kindness this school year.
Kindness Pledge
I pledge to:
• Stick together against bullying
• Stop hurtful teasing and encourage others to do the same
• Do my part to make my school a “colorful” place by being kinder to others;
• Not let my words or actions hurt others
• Treat others the way I want to be treated

THIRD GRADE HIGHLIGHT
Even though the temperature is finally cooling down, things are really heating up in third grade! Now that our daily routines are firmly in place, it’s time to L-E-A-R-N. In science we learned the importance of the collaboration between scientists and engineers in our first module: The Pet Problem. We were challenged to test and design a “Pet Umbrella” to keep our chosen pet dry during a walk in the rain. Every group discussed, tested, designed, and created a prototype for their pet. Oh, the creativity we observed! We may have to contact “Shark Tank” with some great entrepreneurial ideas!
As if the month wasn’t busy enough, our third grade scientists became butterfly and plant parents too! When our butterfly larvae arrived, we had to transfer all 33 into their own culture vessels. Talk about FUN!!!! This month we will watch and observe these delicate creatures through their metamorphosis from caterpillar to butterfly and then release them into the world to continue to thrive before winter’s chill settles in.
Simultaneously, we will watch our Brassica plants (2 varieties~ standard and purple hairy) grow. As their life cycle progresses, our third grade scientists will observe and record their development into adult plants.

Gym
In the gym we have been learning games that we will continue to play throughout the year. These games help refine commonly used skills that are used in the gym such as throwing, catching, moving in a controlled space, accuracy, problem solving, and strategy. These are games the kids love to play and help us when we get to more specific units late in the semester.
Library
During Library class, Mrs. Farrell read, " The Legend of Rock Paper Scissors" by Drew Daywalt. As a follow-up activity, the students competed in a Rock, Paper, Scissors, challenge. They demonstrated

In Third Grade we are working on carousel horse paintings. In Fourth Grade we are working on mixed media maps. In Fifth Grade we are working on mixed media stained glass letters or numbers.
Music
We have been getting ready for Halloween in music class, whether it be with spooky songs or music related games. The students have been singing various songs between each grade, and their voices have really been coming along. Rehearsals have officially started for the Westbrook Park Voices (the select 5th grade chorus), and I am so excited to continue shaping up their music for the winter concert, in addition to the 4th and 5th grade chorus.
