Track Finals at LHS on May 9 and 11
This event will NOT impact instruction at LHS, however, there are two things to be aware of:
1. street parking around LHS will be VERY limited starting around 11am on both days.
- We are not able to limit street parking around our school (along J St., 6th St, L St., etc...).
- The main lot off of J Street will be available for LHS students, LHS staff, and District staff who work in our parking lot. That lot will be open for our students and staff during the school day on both days.
- We will work hard to limit access to the J Street main parking lot during school hours. Event athletes, coaches, and spectators will not have access to the J Street lot from about 10am-3:30pm.
- We encourage you to park in the main lot in the morning both days and we will have a system to get you back into the lot easily after lunch (if you leave campus).

LHS Peer Tutoring!
LHS offers an incredible tutoring program that is designed to help students get their homework done, get organized, to ask questions, to get reteaching, and even to take care of test retakes (for some teachers!). We are prepared to offer support in all content areas taught at LHS.
Where:
- In Person at LHS Library or online using Google Meet - code: LHStutoring
When:
- M-F from 7:15-8:15am
- M from 2:30-4:30pm
- T-Th from 3:30-5:30pm
Keep in mind, that the library hosts our tutoring program to support students with learning. The library is not open for hanging out during tutoring times - all students must be actively involved in some type of academic activity during the tutoring program hours if they are in the library.

Counseling Corner / Building a Course Schedule: How Does it Work?
The end of the school year is quickly approaching and although there is SO much to do to get ready for graduation, finals, AP testing and so much more. This is also the time of year the counselors start focusing on next year’s class schedule. We work closely with Mrs. Hladun to help her build a class schedule based primarily on what courses students want to take. This is why we try to keep schedule changes to a minimum in the fall. Significant changes can unbalance the schedule, resulting in full classes in some periods and small classes in other periods. To prevent this, we do try to have students stick to the courses they requested and we planned for.
Following are the main steps involved in building the class schedule each year:
Determine what courses will be offered.
Have students request courses.
Use the number of requests for each class to determine how many sections of each course will be needed to accommodate student requests.
Match appropriate staff to each course based on availability and credentialing rules.
Build a first draft of a schedule and get input to ensure minimal conflicting classes and that students have as much access to all courses as possible.
Adjust, adjust, adjust.
Once the majority of the students are fully scheduled, work on incomplete schedules and any specialized placements.
We are currently in the middle of this process and will remain there well into the summer. The counselors will work hard in early August to have all student schedules complete prior to the first day of school. Schedule pick up for next year will be just prior to the first day of school. More communication will be sent out over summer to keep you informed.
College & Career Update!
See where our Class of 2023 graduates are headed next. This map will be updated as Seniors commit to their college plans for this fall! Class of 2023: Where we are headed.
It's the last full month of school. Before you know it, school will be over. Here are a few things to keep in mind.
- If you would like to be involved over the summer, be sure to check on Schoology for job postings, volunteer opportunities as well as summer learning opportunities. If you need more information, stop by the College and Career Center to see postings and additional information.
- If you are a Senior, we would love to get you on the map! Please email or stop by the College and Career Center and let us know where you are heading in the fall to pursue higher education.
- Seniors, also make sure you filled out your FAFSA and requested a transcript through parchment. Please come see me if you need assistance.
Keep cool and enjoy the rest of the few days of the school year.
Wellness Center Update!
Ever wonder what most students need when they come to the wellness center? Wonder not -- we have the data on that! 38.6% of our students are coming in for a break. 14% are coming asking to speak with someone for support. 37% are choosing to spend their lunch hour or open periods in our space. 6% are receiving counseling, 2% are in crisis, and the remaining ~3% are getting resource information.
This month's mental health focus: Mental Health Awareness Month
May is Mental Health Awareness month. Why do we care about raising awareness of mental health? We know that half of all people experiencing a mental health condition will not receive treatment or support (source). Stigma and discrimination can contribute to worsening symptoms and reduced likelihood of getting treatment. A recent extensive review of research found that self-stigma leads to negative effects on recovery among people diagnosed with severe mental illnesses. Effects can include:
- Reduced hope
- Lower self-esteem
- Increased psychiatric symptoms
- Difficulties with social relationships
- Reduced likelihood of staying with treatment
- More difficulties at work
(Source)
To celebrate this month and raise awareness for our students, we are putting on an entire month of activities. I have linked a calendar of activities here. Most of our wellness events will occur during the lunch hour, including special guest presentations from Vincent Hurtado (teaching yoga), Sylvia Ward (knitting and crocheting), and Kristina Kennedy from Habits Evolve will be offering a workshop during the lunch hour.
