Applying STEM to Real Life
Transferring skills from the classroom to the field
STEM Skills in Real Life
How important is STEM education? Look around you. Try to name one thing that hasn't been impacted by some kind of engineer or scientist. Your computer, the table, that cup of coffee – all had to go through the hands of someone with a STEM background. Exposure to science, technology, engineering and mathematics is a cornerstone of a 21st Century education, and proficiency in STEM-related skills is vital to a globally competitive workforce.
This has turned "STEM" into something of a buzzword. Anyone can slap a label on a box and call just about anything a STEM product. So we end up with seemingly endless options for incorporating engineering, design, and creative problem solving into everyday life. But how do we know if they're any good? How do we sift through the haystack and find the core tools that can really help you teach transferable skills in topics like science and math?
You can start here. Today we’re highlighting three core science tools that are not only engaging and fun but also teach real-life skills.
Boson Science Kit
The Boson Science Kit is a set of digitalized scientific exploration tools a young scientist can use to build their own STEM lab. They can safely explore physics, chemistry, and biology tools. Activity cards are included to help students get started.
Unlike traditional science kits, Boson scientific sensors display instant and accurate results in the form of electric signal.
Setting up the device is very easy, and all the sensors can be used again and again. Measurements can be read directly from the display module.
Take a look at the video below to see Boson Science Kit in action!
Databot
Data surrounds us. It’s in our motions, in the air we breathe, and in the sunshine on our face. What if you could see, play with and understand this data? Now you can.
Using ten sensors and add ons, this easy to use tech cube introduces topics such as: physics, biology, chemistry, earth science, math, coding, art, and engineering. The possibilities with Databot are endless. There a number of free lessons available now - so start exploring!

Science You Can Explore Right Now
Google Science Journal is a free app that transforms any smart device into a pocket-size science tool that encourages kids to examine and analyze the world. With the Google Science Journal they can conduct eye-opening experiments, record observations and make new, exciting discoveries.
Kids can also use this tool to measure their experiment results, take quality photos, and jot down important notes. Google Science Journal even has a library of ready experiments available here.
Additional Solutions for Virtual Learning
We're working closely with schools and other partners to provide more solutions for virtual learning. Some of these solutions include our summer camps for ages 4-12. Be on the lookout for more 2020 summer updates.
In the meantime, take a look at our Online STEM Academy. This 12 week program is grade-specific (ranging from Pre-K to eighth grade) and includes self-paced activities and worksheets for your students. No extra tools are needed - just your student and a computer or tablet!
