GLOW Students & Families,

I hope you had a great weekend!

Last week was a great one at GLOW! We had our Pops Concert on Tuesday and got to hear our very talented High School Choir sing. If you missed it you can find some clips in the link provided in this week's newsletter.

Chef Emeril Lagasse also visited our campus on Thursday and because of his foundation's generous donation to GLOW, we celebrated the naming of lab, The Emeril Lagasse Foundation Culinary Lab.

On Friday, several of our seniors and student ambassadors participated in the program at the Beacon Chef Event. Guests were so impressed with what our seniors have accomplished and what is in store for their futures. We are so proud of the work happening and successes being achieved at GLOW Academy.

If you have friends, family, neighbors, coworkers, etc. who are exploring school options for their 6th-9th grade girl for next year, please have them reach out to us. Enrollment is now open for the 23-24 school year and we would love an opportunity to share more with them about our school.

We are excited to welcome over 90 professionals to campus on Wednesday morning for our signature, whole-school event - Cool Women, Hot Jobs. From aerospace engineers to zoologists and everything in between, this unique opportunity allows our students to speak with various professionals. Be sure to ask your student who they met and what they learned.

This week, GLOW Academy celebrates our Bus Drivers! We are so thankful for Kevin, Pat, Penny, Tyrone, and Richard for getting our students to & from school safely. If your student is a bus rider, please be sure to have them take a minute this week to give their driver a special shout out!

If you were not able to attend the Pops Concert this past week, you missed a show! HERE is a short clip of just some of the music our outstanding students performed. Congratulations to those on stage and to Mrs. Kittlaus for a fantastic evening. We can't wait to do it again next year!

From February 8th- March 1st, the Prom Committee will be holding our “Dimes for the Dance'' fundraiser. All proceeds will go towards GLOW’s 2nd Annual Prom.

We will be collecting coins and cash in the carpool line daily and will have a QR code for online donations. Money can also be given directly to Mrs. Majeski-Turner in Lowe Hall Room 609.

If we reach $500 by March 1st, the whole school will have a dress down day on Friday, March 3rd, but there will also be the chance to earn additional dress down days for every additional $500 that is collected. Help us earn those dress down days and make this year’s prom amazing!

GLOW Academy will be on the course of the Novant Health Wilmington Marathon on Saturday, February 25th. If you are interested in joining us as we pass out water & cheer on runners, please click HERE to email Jen Wilson-Mathis. More details will follow.

Novant Health is hosting a free medical summit on February 18th for middle & high school students of color. This is open to all students, parents, educators, healthcare professionals, and community leaders. It will provide exposure to various careers in the medical field and networking opportunities. College Bound is hosting Senior Success Series, a signature event for the Class of 2023, on Wednesday, February 22nd, 8:15-12:23 p.m. Our partners from Student Leadership Network will share factors to consider when making a final choice about their plan after high school graduation. Our partners are excited to share with parents about ways to support their senior during a Senior Parent Meeting on February 22nd, 5:30-6:30 p.m. Please reach out to Ms. Lexi with any questions at ashank@glowacademy.net

As part of Financial Aid Awareness month in February 2023, NCSEAA and CFNC are pleased to bring you the How to Pay for College webinar series.

Students and their families are often confused about how to bridge the gap between family funds, financial aid and the total cost of paying for college. Funding a college education shouldn’t be a mystery. Having a better understanding of the funding landscape can help families build a sound plan so students can focus on their studies.

Parents, our PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions & Support) Team is working in January to further educate parents about PBIS and how it is implemented as our Core Behavior Plan at GLOW.

What is PBIS?

PBIS helps schools create a common language around student behavior expectations and focuses on teaching expectations, preventing problems, and using logical consequences. At GLOW, we have established a common language by identifying 4 key expectations (respectful, responsible, safe, and kind) for all students. PBIS requires that we focus first on educating students about expectations and recognizing students who exhibit these behaviors (respect, responsibility, safety, and kindness).

Students have been provided instruction regarding what it means to be respectful, responsible, safe, and kind in all school environments. When we communicate with students about behavior that requires redirection, we use these 4 key words to communicate with students and re-teach expectations, as needed.

We encourage you to also use the language of GLOW's expectations when communicating with your student about behavior in and out of school. We believe that all behavior (appropriate an inappropriate) can be aligned with these 4 expectations.

Cold and flu season is upon us. To prevent widespread flu, GLOW will be following the recommendations and guidelines outlined by the CDC and New Hanover County Health Department:

Please do not send your child to school if she has or has had:

• fever of 100 degrees or higher within the last 24 hours (must be fever-free without medication for 24 hours before returning to school)
• Vomiting or diarrhea within the last 24 hours.
• Symptoms that make it hard for your child to participate in school such as frequent coughing, headache, body aches, fatigue, earaches.
• Strep Throat- until on antibiotics 24 hr.

COVID diagnostic testing will be available to students at GLOW for the 2022-23 school year. Online registration must take place before testing can occur (Note: registration from last school year is no longer valid).
