Over the past week or two many of our students have visited places of interest around Taranaki- Lake Rotokare, our local marae, Tawhiti Museum. All reports back indicate fantastic learning opportunities, wonderful behaviour from the students, super parent helpers, and great planning and organisation by the staff. We look forward to the Pouakai team visiting Purangi Kiwi reserve next week and of course the Intermediate camp to Rotorua in May.

Last weekend I came to watch the Inglewood team play in their Division 2 Super Smash final against New Plymouth Old Boys'. Although just beaten the Inglewood boys showed great determination and plenty of self belief as they got themselves close to winning. IPS boys, Noah, Tony and Isaac all played very well. More importantly they were having fun, enjoying playing with their mates and just developing all the skills being a member of a team is about. The parent encouragement from both teams was fantastic and both teams played the game in the right spirit. I'm sure it is not too late to join a local club for the winter sports, and I know the local rugby, football, league and other codes would love anyone who is keen to come along and give it ago. Team sport certainly has many benefits for everyone.

Coming up this year May/ June schools will have their triennial Board of Trustees elections. The school will ask for nominations early next term, which close 24 May. If you or someone you know might be interested in this role please think about it over the holidays ready for the opening of nominations.

We would love to see all our students and staff wearing their gumboots to school this Friday. Please bring a gold coin donation to support this awesome cause.

PhotoLife envelopes have been handed out to all students this week. Please check your students bags. If you wish to have a sibling photo taken, please collect and envelope from the school office. Each envelope is individually printed with each student's name, class and code. Please return one envelope for each child. All envelopes with money are to be returned to school by Friday 10 May. Thank you.

We have a large amount of lost property at school. Please check the plastic bin in the hall foyer for your child's belongings.

Some of those cheap items for lunch boxes are seasonal fruits and vegetables. Carrots always fill the tummy and apple are great too. To save wastage, cut the apple in half and scoop out the core or alternatively quarter it. We get so many apples with just a few bites then thrown away. Like potato chips, purchasing items like raisins in larger bags works out to be more economical. Save the planet and save money.

What a great way to travel. Travel safely by ensuring your child knows the expectations and can follow the road rules. Helmets are essential and if cycling to school you as parents should have signed a permission slip allowing them to do so. Contact the office if you have not yet completed this form. Students are expected to dismount their mode of travel at the patrolled sites, walk them to and through the gates and the rest of the way to the bike shed. Scooter racks are planned to be built at the back of the school in the future, along with the development of the cycle track.

Yes, we need more clear 1.25 litre and 2.25 litre bottles. If you have an interest in assisting with environmental projects please contact Mrs Ritchie who would love some support. We have a lot of projects and the Enviro Crew work most Tuesday and Thursday lunchtimes on projects. The bottle house will be worked on from 11 am - 2.45 pm Tuesday 9 April. If you are keen you are welcome to join the group at any time you can throughout this time.

As I jumped into the front of the rickety boat at Tawhiti Museum, I heard silence and the slight chattering of the people behind me. I was at the very, very front of the boat. Off we went. I saw the Kunekune pig jump out of nowhere, I heard the pig snort. I also heard myself scream when the pig jumped out Aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh!!!!! The next part was the trading. The two sides were giving away what was precious to them. I could see the Maori giving the Pakeha pigs and kumara. The Pakeha were giving the Maori muskets and guns in return. The next part was the Musket wars, where both sides of Maori had Muskets. I got so scared that I hid under the seats. When we floated past the people who were shooting the guns, I kind of felt like they were trying to shoot me - that’s why I hid under the seats. But I know the “people” are only mannequins. One of my favourite bits was the massive boat. The Maori were trading their flax, kunekune and veges for the Pakehas muskets. You could even hear them trading stuff on the boat. The Pakeha were trading from the boat and the Maori were trading from the ground. My favourite, favourite part would have to be getting scared. It was so much fun!!! I learnt that not all Maori or all Pakeha got along, and that it was hard for Maori to live with the Pakeha because they had way more useful stuff to use for the wars and to find food. That’s why they started trading. The visit to Tawhiti Museum was so interesting and cool.

This year we have applied for hours for classical guitar lessons again. Should your child be interested in attending these free ‘half hour lessons’ to be held on a Tuesday afternoon at 3.15 – 3.45pm and 3.45pm – 4.15pm, please contact the office to enrol. Students will be grouped in ability/age groups. Limited places. Lessons will be for a 30 week period (excluding school holidays) and will be held in our school library. For ages from: 8yrs – 13yrs. All students will require their own guitar to enable practice at home etc. While the 1/2hr lessons are ‘free’, there will be a charge of $10 to cover the cost of photocopying etc.
