Week of February 11, 2024
What's Up Next?
Good Day HES Family & Friends!
Thank you for an awesome week last week! We appreciate the support showed at our STEM Night. From the looks of that evening, everyone appeared to be having fun learning. Please check out a few of our pictures from that event below. We also want to say CONGRATULATIONS to all of our Science Fair Participants. Our students that placed 1st and 2nd in the Science Fair will be moving on the the State Science Fair next month. We are proud of all of our students for the great job they did this year.
The week ahead is a short week. Please be reminded that we will be on Winter Break beginning Wednesday, February 14 - Monday, February 19. We will be hosting our Elementary School's Love & Basketball Game Tuesday, February 13th at DHS's Gym. We will transport all eligible students that have paid to participate (either by purchasing a t-shirt or paying the $3.00 entry fee) by bus. We look forward to having a fun-filled two days this week with students with gathering some academic achievement data and having some fun before taking a break to "Sharpen the Saw."
If your child is a car rider, please make sure that you have your car tag number hanging/posted in a viewable location when you come to pick up your child during dismissal. Vehicles that do not show your car tag to our staff member, will not be able to pick up the child in the back car rider line up. These parents/guardians will have to report to the front of the building to wait for your child to be brought around to the front of the building for dismissal at 3:30 p.m. This system was put into place at the beginning of this school year to ensure the safety of our students when dismissing to vehicles. Please help us by making sure you have a car rider tag visible when picking up your child. If you are in need of a tag, please stop by our Front Office. We will be glad to assist you. Also, early dismissals from the Front Office ends at 2:30 p.m. each day. Please make arrangements to arrive prior to this time, if you need to pick up your child early.
Lastly, if your child has absent for any reason and you have not submitted written or doctor's excuses, please be sure to submit to your child's teacher by Tuesday to clear up attendance issues before going on break. We thank you for your continued support of our students and school.
Academic Parent Teacher Team Night (APTT #2)
Thank you parents for assisting us in giving feedback on the Georgia Parent Survey!
APTT #2 - Can you balance the monkeys?
Students test their math skills by seeing if they can add up the right numbers to balance the scale with the correct number of monkeys. This kindergarten student had some mad math skills. She was definitely up for the challenge!
APTT #2 - Tangrams
This 3rd grade student challenged Dr. Edmond to completing a tangram. Well, let's just say we have some very smart students. Jeffery did a great job in completing the task first!
APTT #2 - Straw Towers
Can you build the biggest straw tower? What object will you make? Check out these 4th graders trying to make the biggest structure they can make using only straws.
APTT #2 - Pipe Cleaner Challenge
Can you build a structure to hold a ping pong ball using only pipe cleaners? Well, this 2nd grade student was successful at meeting the challenge!
APTT #2 - Screaming Balloons!
This Pre-K student wanted to see what all the noise was about with this screaming balloon. He created an alarm with the use of a balloon and a screw that made a noise at a distance if moved the right way.
Habit of the Week: Habit #7 – Sharpen the Saw!
Since we are about to take a break away from school for our Winter Break, I want to encourage everyone to take time to do something nice for yourself. Relax your mind. Do something fun that you have not had an opportunity to do in a while. This will help you feel better about accomplishing the goals you have set for the year. We want our students to return back from the break ready to push forward a little more as they continue to work hard towards high achievement and success.
Family Activity: Make a list of things each person wants to do for fun and relaxation for the break. Then, create a schedule to make it happen. Have fun Sharpening your Saw!
Habit #7: Balance is Best!

Showing off A Little Bit of Kindness!
Hillcrest Leapsters are spreading kindness for the month of February. Students will watch kindness spread through their school as they complete kindness links for their acts of kindness. These links will be hanging in the hallways of Hillcrest to celebrate kindness!

3rd & 4th Grade Students Visit Little Tokyo
Congratulations to this group of students who demonstrated growth on all five of their Middle of the Year assessments! Students were treated to a lunch date with Dr. Edmond and Dr. Paulk at our local Little Tokyo restaurant. Students also had an opportunity to practice etiquette
skills and share aloud what they have gained from this experience. We are proud of the growth our students are continuing to make.
