For the Week of November 27, 2023
Dear Families,
Tekonsha Schools Receives Two Mini Grants!
Each year, the Guido A. and Elizabeth H. Binda Foundation, provide funding to the Calhoun ISD for a mini grant program to support educators from Barry. Branch, and Calhoun Intermediate School Districts. Grant applications are submitted and read by a committee of educators to determine funding. Tekonsha Community Schools is pleased to announce that we have received funding for two different mini grant proposals!
K-12 Music Teacher Mrs. Ashley Hall received $1000 to fund her grant, "Exploring Children's Literature Through Music." With grant funds, Mrs. Hall will be able to purchase another Orff xylophone to use with her K-5 music classes. Grant funding will also allow her to purchase a variety of children's story books that contain dialogue and refrains that help to teach students about rhythm, melody, dynamics and expression. The xylophone will play out these musical concepts. The elementary currently has two of these instruments, so this addition allows more students to be actively engaged in the learning at the same time!
Mrs. O'Keefe also received $1000 for her grant, "Experiencing a Total Eclipse." Funding from the grant will allow for a student assembly in both the HS/MS building and the elementary building from the Kalamazoo Astronomical Society to talk about the total eclipse of the sun that will be happening this year, on April 8, 2024. The presentation will give a preview of this historic event, explain why solar eclipses happen, and show how to safely view the eclipse. Grant funding will also allow for the purchase of safety glasses for all students, to allow them to safely view the eclipse when it happens.
Over the years, Tekonsha staff have received a number of mini grants from the Binda Foundation and the CISD. We are extremely appreciative of the opportunity that the Guido A. and Elizabeth H. Binda Foundation has shown to help support these unique learning opportunities to students not just in Tekonsha, but across Barry, Branch, and Calhoun Counties!
Game Safety Reminders
Just a reminder, students under the age of 13 should have a responsible adult present at any home sporting event to supervise the student. Also, students need to stay in the gymnasium, gym lobby, or cafeteria for concessions. Thank you!
Football and Cheer Honors Night!
The awards night to honor our fall football and cheer teams will be held on Thursday, November 30th at 6 pm in the high school cafeteria. All members of the junior high and high school football teams, as well as the football cheer team, are invited to come and be celebrated! The program will be immediately following the Winter Sports Parent Meeting. Please direct any questions to your coach!
Thank you, Lisa Sands - State Farm!
Student Section Theme Nights!
Please Dress for the Cold!
The season of cold and snow has officially arrived. Weather permitting, our elementary students go outside for recess every day. In order for them to stay warm and dry, it is critical they come to school with appropriate winter clothing. During the winter months, students should have a coat, snow pants, outside snow boots, gloves, a hat, and a pair of dry inside shoes to change into after playing outside.
Once there is measurable snow on the ground, students who are lacking snow boots and snow pants will only be allowed to play on the sidewalk. It is important for kids to have the proper winter gear so they can get fresh air, have physical activity, play with their peers, and remain dry and comfortable when they return to class.
If you are unable to provide your student with any of the required winter-wear, please complete and return the slip below and we will be happy to assist you!
Persuasive Turkeys!
Students in Mrs. Sayles' 4th/5th class spent some time channeling their inner turkeys to write a persuasive essay on why people should eat anything other than turkey for their Thanksgiving meal. This creative writing assignment helped students to practice writing an opinion piece, supporting a point of view with reasons and information. Students also were responsible for peer editing their writing.
Concessions Workers Still Needed
Mark your calendar for the December Boosters Meeting on December 6 at 6:30 pm in HS Cafeteria!
Santa Claus for Schools
Santa Claus for Schools is a charitable campaign that was started several years ago. Often teachers find that they are in need of “extra” things for their classroom, yet they know that there is not enough general budget money to spend on them. The teachers know that the students would benefit from these purchases, but do not order them in an attempt to save money for the school. At the same time, community members often feel they want to do something to help the schools, but they want to “see” something for their money. This campaign is an attempt to allow people in the community to see their donations go directly to work by purchasing items for classrooms.
In the past, this has been a very successful campaign. We are excited about the opportunity to continue this unique community tradition again this year. We will post the teachers’ “wish list” in the Tekonsha IDEA each week from November 20th through December 30th.
If you would like to make a general monetary contribution to the program, or if you would like to donate to purchase a specific item on the list, please contact Trisha Blashfield at 517-767-4121 ext 100 or by email at tblashfield@tekonsha.k12.mi.us. Checks should be made out to:
Tekonsha Community Schools and sent to 245 S Elm Street, Tekonsha, MI 49092.
We sincerely appreciate any donation, small or large, that we receive. Our students benefit greatly from your generosity!
