A Message from Principal Downey
- Welcome to the 2022-2023 school year! I am thrilled to be joining the Chris Yung Team as your new principal. Thank you for such a warm welcome! I've met so many of our Chris Yung families during my short time here, and I look forward to meeting all of you throughout the school year.
- I also look forward to working with our great assistant principals, Ms. Quattrone and Ms. Watford (pictured with me at the right).
- I hope you will join me for our first Parent Advisory meeting which will be held here at the school at 6:00 PM on September 20th. All Chris Yung parents/guardians are welcome to attend and child care will be provided here at the school. I hope you will come to learn more about our plans for the year.
- I will publish a newsletter each month with a Principal's message and other important updates.
- Please feel free to reach out to me to introduce yourself or to share any questions/insights you may have. You can email (downeysp@pwcs.edu) or call the school at 571-598-3500.
I hope to see all of you on September 20th!
Stephanie Downey, Principal

Attendance is Important - EVERY Day!
Regular attendance is vital for student success. When students come to school regularly, starting as early as preschool and kindergarten, they have an opportunity to achieve academically and thrive. Research shows that when students are chronically absent – missing 10% or more of the school year or 18 days over an entire year – they are less likely to read proficiently by third grade, achieve in middle school and graduate from high school.
- Work with your child and his/her teacher to develop your child’s strong attendance.
- Talk about school– sing about it – make it an adventure!
- Set a regular bedtime and morning routine.
- Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
- Share ideas with other parents for getting to school on time.
- Keep your child healthy and make sure your child has the required shots.
- Attend Back to School night (October 12th and 13th) with your child to meet teachers and classmates.
- Ask family members or neighbors for assistance if you need help.
- Try to schedule non-Covid-19 medical appointments and extended trips when school is not in session.
September is School Attendance Awareness Month. For more information, visit the Attendance Works resource page.
Transportation Procedures: Thank you for your help!
We appreciate your patience during the first two weeks of school, as we have worked to get arrival and dismissal procedures in place. Our top priority is the safe arrival and departure of our students!
Please review the following Kiss & Ride rules and refer to the map below:
- Pull your car forward to the yellow zone before your child gets out of the car.
- Students should load and unload in the yellow zone only.
- Load and unload students from the passenger side of the car.
- Remain in the driver's seat while your child is unloading. If assistance is needed to get your child out of the car, a staff member will be happy to help.
- Keep goodbyes brief so the line can keep moving.
- Do not pass other cars that are loading or unloading children.
Other Arrival and Dismissal Reminders
- If you are making a change in your child's dismissal arrangements, please call the office by 3:00 to inform us of the change. For example, if your child is a bus rider and you will be picking them up at dismissal instead, please inform the office prior to 3:00.
- Anytime a child is being picked up in the office, the parent/guardian will be required to present an I.D. (driver's license).
- If you are leaving your car to enter the school, please park your vehicle in the parking lot. Do not park in the bus loop or the Kiss & Ride loop.
The Chris Yung Happy Birthday Policy
Birthdays are special - especially to young children! At Chris Yung Elementary, we want students to be recognized on their birthday while keeping everyone healthy and safe. Our Happy Birthday Policy is the following:
- We will have one monthly celebration of birthdays each month. It will be held the last Friday of the month. For example, if your child's birthday is October 19th, the classroom celebration for his birthday - and other classmates with October birthdays - will be held the last Friday in October. The teacher will arrange for one parent to bring in a store bought birthday treat on the final Friday of the month. Only the parent(s) who has confirmed with the teacher will bring the treat to the class.
- On the actual day of your child's birthday, his/her name will be announced on the morning announcements and in his classroom.
If you have questions about our Happy Birthday Policy, please contact your child's teacher or the office.
