What Does The Fox Say?
September 28, 2023
Dear Inspire Parent/Guardian,
It feels real. My current life doesn't exist. I am sleeping and having a nightmare except I don't realize I am asleep. It moves from one dark scene to another even darker scene. I am at a distance and I cannot help. They fall over and simply crumple to the floor. Then I am being pulled away. I hear a sharp BEEP sound. Then another BEEP. I'm slowly waking up. The sound is there again. Now I can hear words but I can not make it out. Maybe it will go away. No, it doesn't. BEEP... "low battery". I roll over and pull at my phone. It's 4:47am. I tell my husband the smoke detector is going off. I'm disoriented from the nightmare, I can't shake off feeling unsettled and confused. Is this even real or am I still dreaming? He's up, there are sounds downstairs, and then he's being quietly loud at the end of the hallway. Then there's a looong high pitched screech and a series of BEEP BEEP BEEEEEEEP. I go to help. Husband says he put in new batteries and it's not working. Apparently, the excruciating and prolonged sound is what happens when you press the reset button. 10yo is now awake. Husband goes to lay down with her. Now I try to deal with the smoke detector. I have to turn on the hallway light to see. My eyes have to readjust. I think one of the batteries is facing the wrong way. I flip it over. It won't stop beeping. Ughhh, we have to hit the reset button again. BEEP BEEP BEEEEEEEP! Then the house goes silent. I say hello to 10yo and gently rub her back. My husband stays with her, hoping she will fall asleep. I have to get ready for work. I'm dead tired but calm. We were all calm. Why does it seem so odd that we were so calm?
I think back to when she was little, an infant. When I was pregnant, I took the classes, I read the books, my mom friends had plenty to tell me. But NOTHING prepared me for after birth. It magnified all my fears of not being a good mom. Feed for twenty minutes on each side (WHAT@#!?), she cried all the time, don't use pacifiers (American Pediatric Association changed that recommendation at some point, a fat load of good that did me /s), wake her up every 2-3 hours at night to feed, record the number of diapers, check for jaundice, lightly clean under her chin where the milk gets caught, arggghhhh... it felt never ending and it was overwhelming. I don't miss any of that. At my weakest and in the middle of the night, I walked into the bedroom and threw my body on the bed, smashed my face into the mattress and defeatedly whimpered, "I ruined our lives." It would be years before I was sure that I did not. It is a love that is unmatched and she is the best thing that ever happened to me. And all these years later, at the unreasonable time of 4:47am, rather than waking up in panic, not wanting to get out of bed, pretending to be asleep so my husband would get up and take care of a screaming baby, and feeling angry because my exhaustion blinded my logic, we both got up, took care of it, and moved on with our day. No drama, no pain and no tears. I absolutely have not forgotten about the rough days but I remind myself there are so many good days. That's the vibe today... Cheers to all our kids having mostly good days.
Together, we are Inspire.
Sincerely,
Linda August
Principal
