Puketapu School Newsletter
Week 3, Term 1 2020
Empower All People to be Healthy, Lifelong Learners
Kia kaha - do your best * Kia māia - be courageous * Kia manawanui - have a heart
From our Principal
Kia ora koutou,
At Puketapu we are proud to be a PB4L (Positive Behaviour for Learning) School.
PB4L School-Wide looks at behaviour and learning from a whole-of-school as well as an individual child perspective. The framework is based on international evidence.
The Positive Behaviour for Learning School-Wide framework, otherwise known as PB4L School-Wide, is helping New Zealand schools build a culture where positive behaviour and learning is a way of life. The framework can be tailored to your school’s own environment and cultural needs.
It’s not about changing the students; it’s about changing the environment, systems and practices you have in place to support them to make positive behaviour choices.
We teach our students expectations at our school. Here are some of the our expectations that we have been teaching at the start of the year.
PB4L Expectations:
Walkways are for walking - All students are to walk under the walkways, scootering and biking happen in their designated areas.
The School Driveway is just for cars - no families or students are to walk down the school driveway.
Hats - all staff and students are to wear hats when they are outside in Term 1 (we model what we want to see)
We are kind to others in our environment - we don't throw dirt on the dirt pile
We only wear hats outside, not inside.
Many classes have also taken on the 3G's:
Greet, Get Ready for Learning, Gratitude - we love being greeted in the morning and also greeting others, we get ready for our learning and we give thanks and show gratitude at the end of the day.
Thanks for a great week.
KIA KAHA - KIA MĀIA - KIA MANAWANUI
Hamu Taiawa
Puketapu School would like to acknowledge the passing of former student Hamu Taiawa who was sadly killed in an accident in South Taranaki last week.
Hamu attended Puketapu School from Year 3 to Year 8 and touched the lives of many teachers and members of staff.
Our hearts go out to his whanau at this sad time.
Bike Day
Thank you to Andy Patterson for coming along last Wednesday for the Play Bike fun organised through the Let's Go team. Lots of fun on the bikes followed by a dip in the pool.
Thanks to Ethan Sheaf-Morrison for some of the great pictures.

Touch Season has landed!
Parents and players, please remember to support coaches by helping to do the subbing, keeping everyone is the right place and making sure everyone, children and adults, are following our school values.
Keep an eye on our Facebook page for the draw each week. If you do not use Facebook let someone in your team know so they can keep you up to date.
Great weather for Cricket
This week our Kowhai and Kauri students have been learning all about cricket with a group from Taranaki Cricket. This is Kowhai 2 practicing their throwing and catching skills.
... and for swimming!
Weet-Bix Tryathlon is coming
Weetbix Tryathlon - Wednesday 29 March 2020
This is a great event for 7-15 year olds, competing against kids of their own age from all over Taranaki. A great challenge and heaps of fun too.

Free places for first timers!
We are very lucky to have 12 sponsored places.
The rules:
- It must be your first time entering the Tryathlon
- A parent must be able to take the child to and from the venue (Ngamotu Beach, from 8.00am)
- Get your details to the office asap! Places are limited, so if they sell out, we miss out!
Signing out
The tablet on the front desk is easy and quick to use and makes sure we know where everyone is and that they are safe.

Keeping our Kids Safe on the Road
We would like to say a huge thank you to all the whanau who are being responsible careful drivers outside our kura.
It’s wonderful to see so many tamariki walking, scooting or biking to school and using the alternative gates entering school.
It is also great to see our adults being great role models by using the proper entrances and not walking up the driveway. (The driveway is out of bounds for children.)
Why not make the most of the summer weather:
Support active transport by walking or cycling to school with your children – less cars = less danger and less pollution
If you do have to drive:
Be patient around schools – if you need to be somewhere leave 10 minutes earlier
Drop off bay:
Please remember to drive all the way to the end of the drop off bay before you stop to let your tamariki out…or before you know it there are five cars waiting behind you and they park on and across the road.
