Parent Q & A
College Visits?
Question: Can my student be excused from school if they are going to visit a college? Do I need to provide documentation?
Yes, per the state of New Jersey, juniors and seniors can be excused for up to three days in total for college visits, in both their junior and senior year of high school. Freshman and sophomore students are not able to be excused for these absences, but are encouraged to begin these visits on weekend or other days off from school, as well as speaking to the many college speakers that visit school during opportunity period.
For juniors and seniors to be excused from school for a college visit, they must provide a letter from the college stating they were there for a visit. These musted be submitted within 48 hours of their visit to our attendance officer, Ms. Brittingham. This can be handed in as a paper copy or emailed to nbhsattendance@nburlington.com.
Federal Impact Aid Survey
On October 15, 2024, Northern Burlington will electronically solicit the US Department of Education's Federal Impact Aid Student-Parent Survey Form for the 2024-2025 School Year. This form is available through PowerSchool’s parent portal. This survey is important and determines the amount of Federal Impact Aid the district receives. Consequently, this form, one for each student, needs to be completed and submitted by you (student’s parent/guardian/sponsor) by Friday, November 1, 2024.
As of October 15, 20024 you will not be able to access your child(ren)’s grades until the survey form is completed so, please keep your eye out for this electronic survey form next week. Thank you!
Week of Respect
October 7-11, 2024 is the Week of Respect. The Week of Respect is a week celebrated throughout New Jersey to focus on character development and bullying prevention. During the week, activities will happen each morning focused around the acronym THINK, where we will ask students to consider these 5 question:
Monday:
T - is it true?
Students will watch a student reading The True Story of the Three Little Pigs. Video Here
Tuesday:
H - is it helpful?
Students will watch a clip from Mr. Rogers and respond to questions related to the video.
Wednesday:
I - is it inspiring?
Students will watch an inspirational video by Kobe Bryant and create an inspirational message of their own.
Thursday:
N - is is necessary?
Students will watch this clip from Forrest Gump and discuss if the things they consider saying are always necessary to say.
Friday:
K - is it kind?
Students will watch a clip from Hope Floats and discuss kindness and whether their actions exhibit kindness regularly.
Student Lunch Account
Parents can set up lunch accounts with money that their children may access to purchase lunch. Here is the LINK to the Pay Portal set up. Parents will need to refresh this money as their child uses it up to purchase lunch. Students access this money at lunch time using their identification card. It has the added feature that parents are able to track what items their son or daughter is purchasing for lunch.

Clinical Corner
NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, has some great resources on their website for parents. For example, they created The Three C’s to help you connect with your child around mental health and wellness. Here they are in a snapshot:
Get CURIOUS
Use these conversation starters to talk to your kids about what they are experiencing. Remember to listen with curiosity and empathize with them. Here are some examples:
-It seems you are sadder during the evenings. So let’s explore why that may be happening…
-I’ve noticed you seem less interested in some of your favorite activities. Do you notice that too?
-When was the last time you felt this way? What was happening around you?
Get CONCRETE
Check in with your child with some of these questions. NAMI calls it 10 Question Tuesday and the complete list of questions are on their website but here are a few to start!
-What has been taking up most of your mental energy these days?
-What’s your favorite way to relax or de-stress right now?
-What’s something you are looking forward to? What are you dreading?
-Do you feel you have too many responsibilities? Do you think you are managing your time well? What could support you?
Stay COMPASSIONATE
Use compassionate language to ensure your child feels seen, heard, and validated when discussing mental health and wellness. Here are some tips:
-Say “Thank you for telling me that” after they express their feelings.
-Get comfortable with silence as people tend to share more when we show we are listening without interrupting.
-Try to remain calm. If your child senses you are upset they may shut down or be less likely to share in the future.
-Practice active listening, saying things like, “What I am hearing you say is….”
