SCS Weekly Newsletter 10/29/24
A happy week!
From the Principal's Desk:
Dear Salisbury Community School families and friends,
Oh, it's a spooky and exciting week for kids! And many adults, apparently- we've even got parents dressing up their trucks! Thanks to the Salisbury Fire Department for running "Trunk-or-Treat" again this year- it sounds like it was a great success.
A word about Halloween at SCS. Halloween is a bit tricky for schools, for two reasons. One is that some do view it as a religious holiday (although for many I know it's just about dressing up and having candy), and the second reason is that it actually can be pretty disruptive for class, as costumes are pretty distracting for kids (especially when they try to "borrow" parts of them from each other) and a lot of candy being sent in can be distracting as well- especially when students start trading, etc.
With these concerns in mind, we ask that students do NOT wear costumes to school that day, or bring in candy or treats to share. If students would like to dress up to make the day itself feel special, maybe they can wear some black and orange, or some other fall colors on the 31st! Somehow we do always manage to make the day feel festive.
You might very well have some questions about this- please reach out if you do! Always happy to chat.
Best, and thanks,
Bjarki

FOSCS Pasta Dinner, Movie Night, and Book Give-Away!
As part of our "Year-of-the-Book", we will be hosting a Pasta Dinner, Movie Night, and Book Give-Away the evening of Friday, November 8th. The Dinner will begin at 5:00, and the movie will begin at 5:45. Every student will be able to take home a book courtesy of the Children's Literacy Foundation.
All-School Meeting!
We held our second "All School Meeting" of the year. After warming up by singing the Vermont State Song "These Green Mountains", we got into our mixed- age groups to continue work we began in our first meeting. At last meeting we brainstormed what a good school feels like, and this time we chose words from that first brainstorm that students think will best fit into a school-wide motto for the year. The motto will be coming out at our next all school meeting! One preview though: the word the most groups chose to describe a good school was "kind". Agreement all around!
A fully repaired front window!
Our curved front windows have had a bit of a story over the last couple of years. We had noticed some rot growing on the wood around the windows, and this summer got all that wood cleaned out and replaced! In the process, we realized a crack was growing in the pane on one side, and the other day Desabrais Glass came and replaced the window. They did a great job, and we appreciate the care they took.

Fun Feature! Time-Lapse Picture Project.
New for 24-25: The Time-Lapse Picture Project
This year, we thought it would be fun to chronicle the changes of the season at Salisbury Community School by taking the same picture, at the same time, from the same spot, every week. At the end of the year it will hopefully be a fun thing to look at and share!
