A fun October so Far!
From the Principal's Desk:
Dear Salisbury Community School Community,
I might mention it in this space every year- October is my favorite month. I've always loved it. Cool evenings but still warm days, no more bugs (or a lot fewer, anyway), apple cider donuts, beautiful trees, harvest moons, sweatshirts and shorts being a cozy combination, the whole thing is just great.
October's pretty great in an elementary school too. Now that the year has settled in, routines have been established, and everyone has been learning intently, fun events start popping up that add to the curriculum and give the kids new opportunities and perspectives. These last couple weeks have featured some such events: an author visit that served as the kick-off to the "Year of the Book", some fun field trips, and, of course, our 3rd Annual Fall Foliage Fun on the Secret Soccer Field! It's been a good time.
Enjoy the pictures, look through for the news, and don't miss the "Time Lapse Picture Project" at the end!
Best,
Bjarki

CLIf Kick-Off With Duncan McDougal!
Last Monday, we were joined by Children's Literacy Foundation (CLIf) founder Duncan McDougal and Executive Director Laura Rice to kick off our CLIf "Year of the Book". Duncan gave a wonderful book talk and read stories, and then he and Laura helped each student pick out a book to take home. We are excited for all the speakers, books, and other opportunities CLIf is going to bring us this year. Thank you Children's Literacy Foundation!
4th Grade Goes to Dead Creek!
This week our 4th Grade, in an annual tradition led by teacher Amy Clapp, headed over to Dead Creek Wildlife Management Area in Addison. While they were there they learned about Bird Banding, visited the Museum at the Visitor's Center, and explored Dead Creek together.
Kindergarten enjoys the October outdoors!
Kindergarten went across the street for apples, and spent time in their outdoor classroom with 5th Grade!
Getting Industrious at Recess!
Students were enjoying making a leaf pile, but running out of leaves, so we gave them a giant plastic planter/bucket and just stood back and let them get to work. Lovely teamwork with NO adult leadership or intervention.
And of course: Fall Foliage Fun!
Students spent the afternoon bobbing for apples; playing soccer, kickball, and football games; having many rounds of tug-of-war, Bagg-o, making art, getting face painted, and just generally messing around out of our "secret soccer field". A favorite annual tradition in an amazing spot.
Thanks so much to our FOSCS volunteers Christina Sheldrick, Steven Leatherwood, Jen Armstrong, Jessica Hellyer, Lani McNeil, Emily Sheehan, Khristina Hedding, and Austin Bowdish for helping out, and a big thank you as well to Kris and Olivia Wimett for giving the field a mowing!

Salisbury Family Center after school care at SCS opening soon!
This year, we are VERY excited to announce that we are working with the Salisbury Family Center (a childcare center located in Salisbury Village) to bring afterschool care to SCS. Salisbury Family Center is owned and directed by Christian Bowdish, a Salisbury resident, and they will be operating an after-school care in our gym! This event was shared by a staff member, and it looks like a great way to get winter gear!
Fun Feature! Time-Lapse Picture Project.
New for 24-25: The Time-Lapse Picture Project
This year, we thought it would be fun to chronicle the changes of the season at Salisbury Community School by taking the same picture, at the same time, from the same spot, every week. At the end of the year it will hopefully be a fun thing to look at and share! Check out the first five weeks below!
