October Newsletter
A Note From the Principal...
Dear Families,
How wonderful to see so many faces at Fall Fest last week. If you weren't able to join us, consider joining for our next event in December. These opportunities help show our kids the school and home love we share for them while also being able to build relationships with other families and staff.
A big thank you to the many staff volunteers who spent their evening running the stations and bringing the fun- we are blessed to have staff who understand the importance of giving their time like this and find value in interacting with families. Another thank you to PTO members and Runnings who made the event possible.
As October comes along, students are busy digging deeper into new learning at each grade. Our goal is to have 100% of our families attend conferences next week. I hope these short segments of time allow parents to be more informed and possibly gain some doable ideas to support your child in continuing to practice new skills and knowledge. If the scheduled dates and times do not work for you, your teacher will work with you to offer an alternative solution to still make this happen. Thank you for teaming with us, we truly are off to a great school year with your help!
With warm regards,
~ Dr. Upton
TEACHER SPOTLIGHT

BPS would like to thank Active Life Chiropractic for spearheading this program, along with the many other community sponsors who have helped make it a reality.

RED RIBBON WEEK - October 28th through November 1st
Grizzly Great and Growth Progress
Grizzly Greats
In the month of September our staff awarded 322 Grizzly Greats!!!! That is a new monthly record. Our students worked so hard to get these!!!
Grizzly Growths
In the month of September our staff problem solved 27 times at the level of a Grizzly Growth. This too is great learning for our students as we help develop their skills in the areas of self management, self awareness, responsible decision making, social awareness, and relationship skills.

Parent-Teacher-Organization (PTO) News
The PTO would like to send out a THANK YOU for everyone who attended and volunteered at Fall Fest. Even though we had to move inside, it turned out to be an absolutely wonderful evening. We also need to shout out a big thank you to all of the community businesses who donated to make Fall Fest a very inexpensive event to put on. Runnings for donating pumpkins, hay bales and waters; Walmart for the baby pumpkins; Nothing Bundt Cakes for the little bundts; Kittyko for the great music; Gateway to Science for the stomp rockets; The Bismarck Library for bringing their Bookmobile; Family Fair and Cashwise for $50 each for cider and supplies; and Ground Round for the popcorn!
We also would like to thank all of you for your enthusiastic chocolate selling. We were able to raise a substantial amount of money for future fun at the school. If you have forgotten to turn in your money for chocolate, please turn it in to the office as soon as possible.
If you would like to have a say in how all that money is spent, plan for conference meals, and find out what is happening at the school, please join us at our October PTO meeting happening Tuesday the 8th at 6pm.
Speaking of raising money, an easy way to earn for the school every day is to start scanning your receipts for Box Tops for education. All you have to do is download the app and take a picture of your grocery receipts. It does all the work for you instantly. This month, sign up with this link, scan within 14 days and earn 50 extra boxtops ($5) for the school!! Make sure to put your childโs grade number and teacher initial on your scans to give credit to their classroom! (For example, Ms. Knudson in Grade 2 would be 2K)

Birthday Celebration
Each day we announce student's birthdays on our video announcements. This year we wanted to do some extra celebrating! BPS received a large donation of birthday cake kits from a local group of girls called BioGirls. This great group of ladies wanted to give back to our community and boy did they. Each month we will take our list of our birthdays celebrated, place them in a name wheel, and randomly select a winner! Today we celebrate our October birthdays!
Building Math Into Everyday
Reading at Home
A few tips on how to support your child's reading at home:
- 1. Read a book with a Fall/Autumn or Halloween theme! If you don't have books with those themes at home, you can always borrow books from the library or listen to a story on YouTube!
- 2. Celebrate Dictionary Day (October 16) - Use a dictionary to look up the definitions of 3 words that you donโt know. Write down the words and keep a lookout for them as you continue exploring new books.
- 3. Blend or "Stretch" sounds in words when reading unknown words - Use the continuous blending strategy to stretch from sound to sound in a word (like a slinky). This strategy works for 3 letter words, as well as multi-syallabic words.
If you wish to read more about blending/spelling strategies, as well as what's happening in the Reading Room, click HERE!
