Mattos Family Update

Dear Mattos Families,

2023 just started, but in FUSD that means it is time to start planning for the next school year! Please read the important information in the flyers below about registration for next school year, especially if you are returning to Mattos next school year. Also, as a science magnet school, we are accepting students from across FUSD (and sometimes out of district). If you have friends who are considering transferring here, please have them contact me and I'd be happy to give them a tour of campus and explain what's coming in 2023-2024 at Mattos.

Our girls and boys basketball teams each played their first game on Friday against Azevada. The girls played excellent defense, but lost their game. The boys team won their game with some strong defense and offense. Congrats to both teams for their excellent show of sportsmanship. It was so much fun to watch our players in action! Please join us at Bringhurst Elementary School for a game below. Please note that it is standing room only, unless you arrive early to secure a folding chair.

A big thank you to kindergarten teachers Mrs. Means and Mrs. Pickett for a fun day in the snow on Friday! Their snow related activities all day, plus the real snow, gave students a very special opportunity to learn and play at Mattos. Thank you also to all the parent (and Mr. Means) for helping at 7:45 a.m. with the snow preparation.

• Please complete this survey by January 31, 2023 so that our wonderful school counselor, Erin Waterhouse, can plan a parent workshop in the next few months. We appreciate all the input so far!

The Great Kindness Challenge

Starting on Monday, January 23, Mattos is participating in the nationwide “The Great Kindness Challenge” and will end January 27. Students will be given a challenge each day to complete during the school day.

Monday: Pick up 10 pieces of trash around the school or in your classroom.

Tuesday: Draw a picture and give it to another student that you may not know.

Wednesday: Write or draw a kind picture/message on the blacktop with chalk.

Thursday: Invite another student you may not know to play with you.

Friday: Send a kind note to a Mattos staff member: principal, teacher (prep, resource, para educators), office staff, counselor, yard duties, school psychologist, speech therapist.

Students will make a mental checklist as they complete each challenge.

When items are forgotten at home, it is important to not interrupt instruction. Please drop off all forgotten items by 9:45 a.m. Anything dropped off by then should be left on the cart outside the office and labeled with student name and room #. A yard duty will deliver those items by 10 a.m. Anything left after 10 a.m. will need to be picked up by your child (we will call the classroom). Please help us out and bring all items by 9:45 a.m.
