Happy Fall, ACE Familiesđ
Welcome ACE Families!
Sometimes it seems like summer will never end. But finally that first cool, crisp autumn chill comes along and rekindles fond memories of the cozy, colorful days and nights to come. So, bring it on, autumn! Give us the shortening days, the diminishing light, and, even, one day soon â although we are not quite ready yet â snow! The changing and passing of the seasons are one of the constant, external rhythms of our lives. Just as creating a routine as a family can help create some healthy norms, easier days, and happier children, embracing and celebrating the changes of the seasons can be a wonderful addition that honors the routines of nature.
Regardless of your childrensâ age, there are many ways to bring the Fall Season into their learning. Songs, games, dances, fingerplays, and stories that honor the changing season are perfect for preschoolers, but are also fun for older children. Older children can find science experiments, math explorations and books that match with the season and can be great at helping prepare seasonal ingredients in the kitchen or to facilitate celebrations together. Enjoy your family time!

ACE Strategy Highlight: Independent Reading
Independent Reading is the foundation of lifelong reading!
Successful independent reading is the end result of a well-executed balanced literacy program. It allows students the chance to âpracticeâ the strategies theyâve learned through guided reading, shared reading, and teacher read alouds â the other components of balanced literacy. With level appropriate materials, students now have the skills they need to read on their own. That means they can read confidently and are actually excited about their ability to read.
How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Practice, practice, practice! How do you get to be a proficient (even prolific) reader? Practice, practice, practice! As all musicians and athletes know, practice takes time. Thatâs why time should be set aside to practice reading as well. Also, by dedicating long blocks of time to independent reading, students quickly get the idea that reading is important.
Before students can become proficient independent readers, they must have the tools they need to be successful. Inside the toolbox are two basic strategies; decoding strategies and comprehension strategies. Decoding strategies help children move forward when they stumble upon a word they donât know. They know what to do to figure it out.
Comprehension strategies guide students to think about what theyâre reading â to make connections, use visualization, ask questions, and make inferences⌠all to synthesize the words they read into something they comprehend. How do students learn these strategies? The teacher models them. Independent reading time is when the students apply them.

Brest Cancer Awareness Month!
For the 31 days of Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM), pink ribbons appear as the impact of breast cancer is brought to the forefront of national conversation.
But we know that to help those facing breast cancer, awareness alone isnât enough. This October, get involved. Get screened. Make a donation. Take action. Make this BCAM about more than awareness.
