Asian American Pacific Islander Month
AAPI
The traditions and cultures that are celebrated during this month include Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Filipino, Vietnamese, Hawaiian, Korean, other Asian and Pacific Islander ancestries. From the history of soybeans to the invention of Ramen that was inspired by empathy for others, students learned about the contributions of Asian culture.
Gratitude
Showing gratitude for others was a theme this year in the library. Students wrote detailed thank you notes to the people in our school community, from crossing guards to former teachers who have helped them along the way. Following the example of Sallie Bee, 3rd grade students were able to show their gratitude to the people around them.
Special thanks to Mrs. Edwards for always displaying student work in such a lovely way for all to see and enjoy.
Jewish American Heritage Month
May is also Jewish American Heritage Month. Students read narrative nonfiction books about philanthropist Judah Touro, artist Ben Shahn, and Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
Hatching Chicks in Room 6
First graders had a bird's-eye view on the life cycle of a chicken in this nonfiction book that takes place in a classroom. The 21-day journey showed students that eggs and chicks can be different colors, how long it takes for eggs to hatch in a nest or incubator, and how long the hatching process is (12-18 hours)!
Fun fact: Did you know the red skin on top of a chicken's head is called a comb?
