What an amazing November!
In academics, the 1st semester is coming to a close in the next few days with Finals on 12/16, 12/19, and 12/20 followed by Christmas Break. A complete Finals schedule is included below. Additionally, we received incredible news this past week regarding Lilly finalists in both Ripley and Dearborn counties. Mason Schutte and Elizabeth Kirchgassner, two of ECs finest are both Lilly Scholarship winners!
In the arts, Winter Guard and Percussion has started coming off of last year's IPA and WGI championships, and we're excited for another stellar season. Try-outs for the spring musical will take place this month, and we're looking forward to another great show in March.
In athletics, football just completed an historic season capped by an amazing OT victory over Roncalli in the semi-state and a dominating win over New Prairie at Lucas Oil Stadium bringing home the program's 3rd state title in school history. Additionally, Christian Garrison was named the 4A Mental Attitude Award winner for his character as well as his athletic, academic, and philanthropic achievements...an amazing recognition, the third for East Central student-athletes in 2022.
Finally, in the midst of this holiday season, our students and student-organizations continue combined efforts with local pantries, Toys for Tots, and clothing drives always seeking ways to give back to this community. In the end, it is in these efforts we should take the most pride.

He volunteers at church picnics and vacation bible school. Luke enjoys listening to music, playing video games, taking naps and hanging out with his friends. He is still deciding if he plans to attend college at Indiana University, Georgetown or Alabama where he will study international studies minoring in Spanish and French. Luke advises his classmates, “ Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, everyone does.” And he comments, “What really matters is how you respond and bounce back from your mistakes, that is a show of character.”
Mason Schutte
It is with great pride that East Central announces Mason Schutte as Student of the Month. Mason is a senior and the son of Scott and Jenny Schutte. He carries a 4.1 GPA and is one of two Ripley County Lilly Scholarship finalists for ECHS! Mason is Senior Class Vice President, Business Professionals of America Vice President, a member of the Student Council as well as a member of the Track & Field team.
If Mason’s name sounds familiar it may be because he is the 2022-23 CEO of the Trojan Exchange, the student-run school merchandise store where all profits go to scholarships for seniors. Mason’s instructor, Mr. Miller has shared that “Mason is an outstanding leader. He really cares about the people he is leading and does way more than he is asked. He is leading the Trojan Exchange to its best year ever." Mason plans to attend Indiana University next fall where he would like to major in marketing and business analytics.
Mason participates in 4-H and enjoys nature and animals as well as hanging out with his friends. He is an active volunteer at church picnics and attends mission trips. He thanks his parents and grandparents for being supportive of everything he does along with teaching him to be the best he can be. His advice to classmates is to “enjoy every moment of high school and make the most out of everything”.

ENGINEERING and TECHNOLOGY
My Engineering Essentials class has been learning how to program with Robot C, as well as
building with VEX materials. The latest projects that they have been working on is to create and
program a drag car that can get the fastest time over a 24 feet distance and stop within 6 feet
after crossing the line. The second project that they have been working on is to design, build,
and program a car that can carry out a road trip. I gave the students multiple directions that
they had to follow to get from “their house” to the “movie theater” down the hall. The students
have been doing a great job with these cars and having a lot of fun as well.
My Introduction to Engineering and Design classes have been working on a Reverse
Engineering Project, where the students are asked to carry out a visual, functional, and
structural analysis of an item. Then they have to take the item apart, get accurate
measurements using dial calipers, and then create 3D models of the parts on Autodesk
Inventor.
My Civil Engineering class has spent the majority of the last few weeks working on designing
and creating a Habitat for Humanity House on Revit. My students learned how to create scaled
house blueprints using architectural rulers as well as using the correct symbols. They also had
to follow many accessibility guidelines and codes when designing their houses. After planning
out the houses they started creating 3D models of their houses on Revit. So far the houses are
looking great!
My Computer-aided-Design class has been working on multiple parts and projects on Autodesk
Inventor. One of the projects is to create an East Central Football State Champions related
ornament. I challenged the students to come up with creative designs that represented our
Football team winning state this year and they did a great job with that. After creating the
designs, they also learned how to use the laser engraver and got the opportunity to engrave
their design.
English
It’s the most wonderful time of the year! It’s always so great to see what our students know after their first semester of English class. In English 9, students created presentations about Elizabethan times after having read Romeo & Juliet. English 10 students practiced their debating skills, using the rhetoric and research they learned all semester. Juniors are creating projects connecting standards learned through reading novels and short stories as well as vocabulary words learned from Membean. Students in English 111 honed their skills while writing a textual analysis paper using either The Things They Carried or Into the Wild. Finally, English 12 students wrote research papers, created artistic representations of characters, and/or created videos after reading Macbeth. Finally, AP Literature students created Bento Boxes that represent their independent reading novel. Overall, it was a great end to 2022, and we are looking forward to an equally amazing 2023!

Time is flying and it is hard to believe that we are winding down with the first semester!
AP Drawing students have been working diligently to accomplish half of their portfolio as we come into the winter break. AP Drawing students have adjusted to the rigor and pace to meet their goal at this time of 12 out 20 artworks for their submission of their portfolios.
ECHS drawing students just completed a design contest for artwork potentially becoming part of the expansion of the Dearborn County Courthouse. Lynn Deddens, the prosecuting attorney, sponsored this event for all high school art students from Lawrenceburg High School, East Central High School and South Dearborn High School. The theme for this design contest had to feature some aspect of Dearborn County: historic, current, or patriotic. The theme of the drawing could be any historic building or location in Dearborn County. Up to 12 students with winning submissions will win $50.00 cash and the winning artwork will then be framed and hung in the “Student Art Gallery” at the Dearborn County Courthouse. Stay tuned for announcements of the winning submissions! Below are some of the students with their projects.
Foreign Language
mslyon@sunmandearnborn.k12.in.us
Fall 2022 has been a wonderful time of showing off French skills to others! French 3 students spent the weeks after fall break planning, writing, and finalizing Halloween stories in French. On Wednesday, November 2nd, French 3 students traveled to North Dearborn Elementary, Sunman Elementary, and Bright Elementary schools with the intention to read their stories to the elementary students. They enjoyed reading their stories aloud in French and discussing the meanings in English! It was a great way to introduce a new language to the next generation of learners and all students involved had a fantastic time. They would like to thank each of the elementary schools, their teachers, and their students for allowing the French 3 classes to share their stories with you!
Math
Our Calculus students finished up learning all of the derivative rules before Thanksgiving and are currently working on applying them to real life situations. We have been working on problems that include finding the rate at which water is rising or leaking in a container, how fast an angle of elevation is changing as well as finding the total distance a particle has traveled. Calculus 2 completed advanced integration problems, which include integrating by parts, trig substitution and partial fractions, before Thanksgiving. Now they are working on applying Euler's Method, and separation of variables to complete real life problems. They have been working hard to master these concepts and many more.
Music
Drama Department
Auditions for the spring musical, Footloose December 12th, 13th, and 15thChoir News
The choir department performed at the Lawrenceburg Holiday Expo on Friday, Nov. 18th. The students had a great time performing and spreading the Christmas spirit.
PE/Health
Happy Holidays from the PE/Health Department! Colder weather has the PE classes moving inside, but not before they completed the track unit. Most students improved their mile times from Q1. Summer Boyd, Ava Rosemeyer, Lila Lengerich, and Emma Hornbach were among some of the top performers. Mrs. Andres’ classes enjoyed a day of playing “Duck, Duck, Goose” before paddling their way into table tennis. They will be learning some dance moves this week to prepare for the upcoming Snowball Dance. Mrs. Hendricks spent some time in Mr. Walter’s class educating the students on CPR and AEDs. In her athletic training classes, students are learning about facial injuries and the care for each. Mr. Sipe’s students have increased speed and strength throughout the last 16 weeks. So as the semester closes out, they will be timing their 40’s and maxing out. Look for pictures of their lifts in the next newsletter.
Science
Tim Maluvac - tmaluvac@sunmandearborn.k12.in.us
As the semester winds down, the science department continues to provide high-quality instruction for all students. Here is just a brief glimpse as to the fun experiments occurring in the science department.
Chemistry I students have added information to simple compound formulas and names by describing percent composition, calculating empirical formulas and molecular formulas. As they prepare for their Unit 2 test, students are finishing their measurements for the “bring me a mole” activity and some have completed several enrichment labs to support their understanding of Unit 2 material.
Biology I students are synthesizing protein from strands of DNA by using a codon chart.
AP Biology students are working on understanding cell-to-cell communication by observing the diffusion of a dye through dialysis tubing.
Biomedical Science students are modeling joint articulation of the body and observing how the digestive system breaks down different medications
Chemistry II students are finishing up work on predicting products of chemical reactions. Students simulated particle-level diagrams through the use of M&M's
AP Chemistry students determined the rate law of the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide through measuring the amount of gas produced through a catalyzed reaction with potassium iodide.
Earth Science students are acting as paleontologists discovering fossils and trying to identify and assemble an unknown animal skeleton. Through discussion and collaboration, students are able to reach consensus about what these fossilized remains might have been.
Physics students are continuing to practice problems related to work, power and energy.
Integrated Chemistry/Physics students are learning about electricity and magnetism in self-contained modules for additional practice.
Anatomy students were working on learning all of the different types of bones in the body. They will have a lab practical over identifying bones based on their structure on Monday.
Social Studies
Steve Lewis - slewis@sunmandearborn.k12.in.us
Mr. Owen's American History classes are currently studying the American Civil War (completel with an examination of the era's military tactics and strategies) and finishing up the Semester Projects (a discussion of Change Over Time through the analysis of primary source documents).
Ask your student if this man (James K. Polk) was a "good" or "bad" president:
In AP European History, we have just finished our discussion of the French Revolution and are beginning to examine the Commercial Revolution and the Age of Enlightenment. Ask your student how this man (Josiah Wedgwood) changed the entire world simply through his desire to sell more pottery.
In economics, students are currently working on Google Tour presentations. Each student is responsible for researching current economic measures of modern economies throughout the world and creating a tour of the country using the Google Earth website. Next week, we will study the various monetary and fiscal policies used by our government and Federal Reserve System before we start to focus our attention on the semester exam.
In Intro to American Politics, students have started their Political Party Project in which they create their own political parties. Tasks include a poster, campaign commercial, and a speech.
