Sturgis Elementary Newsletter
November 2023
A Note From Principal Chantal Ligtenberg
Lost and Found:
If you are missing anything, I highly recommend having your students take a look at our lost and found. With the drastic weather changes, the amount of items are increasing steadily!
Sturgis Elementary’s House System:
I am sure you hear a lot about house system from your students! One time of month we are working on building vertical relationships K-4 as well as staff by intermixing all into varying houses. In October we partook in an activity focused on conversational and questioning skills.
23-24 School Fundraiser:
We thank you all for the assistance in our annual fundraiser. We understand that it is never a really good time to fundraise, but we are very appreciative of your efforts. The funds we received will allow us to continue with grade level field trips, transporting students to the high school play in the spring, updating STEM materials, registering students for music and math performances as well as the 3rd and 4th grade spelling bee.
Inclement Weather/School Closings:
On mornings when school is cancelled or a late start occurs, every attempt will be made to notify district patrons by 6-6:30 a.m.
Messages will be received via School Messenger in the event of school closing or early dismissal. School Messenger messages will come from the district level. Please let the school office know if you have changed phone numbers recently so we may make those updates in our system. Messages will also be displayed on the Meade School District website (www.meade.k12.sd.us ).
Orange Flag Mornings:
Orange flag mornings are days when the weather is not conducive for our students to be out on the playground. Decisions are made based on wind, precipitation, and/or a wind chill below 0. Orange flags are placed entering the breakfast drop off area and the entrance of the playground to alert you and your students that they will enter the building. We ask that no visitors go beyond the cafeteria or front entrance when dropping off students. Staff will assist students in getting to their locations when inside.

Unity Day
Unity Day is a campaign founded in 2006 by PACER's National Bullying Prevention Center that is held during the month of October to unite communities nationwide to educate and raise awareness of bullying prevention.
A one-day event held the third Wednesday of October to come together in one giant, ORANGE
message of hope and support. It’s a day to WEAR AND SHARE ORANGE to visibly show that our society believes no child should ever experience bullying.

Volunteering
Did you know that you can volunteer to work in schools throughout the district? Fill out the volunteer form now!
Educating youth takes a community effort, and because of that the Meade School Board is encouraging parents, guardians and other interested patrons to volunteer their time, knowledge and talents.
Members of the community bring new energies and resources into the schools and expand the walls of the classrooms. School volunteers enrich the educational program and strengthen the schools’ relationships with homes, businesses, public agencies and private institutions. All volunteers in the Meade School District do so without pay or employee benefits, except for workers’ compensation. For those interested in volunteering.
Mail to Meade School District, 1230 Douglas Street, Sturgis, S.D. 57785.
