On October 4th, we sent out a letter to families whose child had three or more absences for this year. These letters were sent to families even if the absences were excused. Thank you to all of the families who contacted us to confirm that their child's attendance was accurate and gave us feedback about the process. As a result of that feedback, we will be modifying the letter that we send. The tone and message of the letter caused anxiety for some families unnecessarily. My apologies. In the future, we will make sure that the letter better matches our intent. For those of you who are curious about why we would be sending letters about attendance this early in the year, here are some data points that may surprise you. I think this data will help you understand why we want to communicate with families about attendance. We just need to do it in a way that families will hear and lead them to make adjustments at home if needed. Again, thank you for your consistent support and feedback so that we can do better in the future. Stacy
- So far this school year, 103 students have been absent 3 or more times. That's 23% of our students.
- So far this year, 60 students have been absent 4 or more times. That's 13% of our students.
- The State of IL and the Regional Office of Education consider being absent 10% of the days or more is problematic for student learning. This number used to be 20%. We agree with the lower number as missed instruction is difficult to recapture. As of the day this data was pulled, we had only had 33 days of instruction.
Parent/Teacher Conferences
Parent/Teacher conferences for all grade levels will be held in person during November on the following dates:

Please be on the lookout for a communication from your child’s school/teacher with more information.
Building Leadership Team
As shared in a previous family newsletter, we have a Building Leadership Team (BLT) that reviews data, discusses strengths and areas for growth, and plans/delivers professional development and other system improvements that benefit our students. Our BLT is currently looking at academic and social/emotional data (Fastbridge, MAP testing, Guided Reading levels, majors and minors for behavior, and teacher input). Based on the review of this data, we ask questions and determine next steps to support students in all areas . Some of the additional support that is starting now are Check-In Check-Out as well as Reading and Math interventions. Check-In Check-Out is essentially giving a little extra support to students who are working on being respectful, responsible, and safe. At the start and end of the day they connect with an adult who builds them up and helps them focus on the positive. Research shows that when students feel better about themselves, they tend to behave better and perform better academically. During the day the child has a point sheet and is awarded points for making good choices. The students who are in need of this layer of support are starting Check-In Check-Out now! We are also starting Reading and Math interventions. We use specially trained staff members to provide a little extra boost to students who need it in either content area. All families whose children are benefiting from any of these layered supports will be contacted.
