Haskin Improvements
This year, we have one BIG focus: The Haskin Stage!
Over the past year, we've cleaned up many unused spaces around our building and they are now ready to be brought "back to life". The stage is one of those spaces that we would love to make more useable to create memories for our students.
Up until last year, the stage had not been used for over 25 years!!!!
Unfortunately we had to get rid of the 70 year old fabric curtain, the lights and sound system do not work, and the stage is quite dingy.
These are the ways your donations will be put to use:
-Painting: refreshed paint on the walls and ceiling
-Lights: Updated functioning light fixtures
-Curtain: new stage curtain as a backdrop for shows and presentations
-Sound: new operating stationary speakers for the gym, PE, cafeteria & stage use
Thank you for helping make the stage a place for memories to be made!
News On Repeat
Therapy Dogs @ Haskin!
Haskin Elementary is excited to have partnered with Healing Hearts Comfort Dogs. Healing Hearts Comfort Dogs is an all volunteer organization that raises and trains dogs to interact with individuals. They provide canine assisted therapy to the public in schools, hospitals, libraries, nursing and healing facilities and for other community organizations.
Research has shown that simply petting an animal releases a relaxation response. Therapy animals lower anxiety and help people relax, provide comfort, reduce loneliness, and increase mental stimulation. A 2019 study published by the National Institute of Health confirms a dog in the classroom promotes a positive mood and provides significant anti-stress effects on the body. An additional study conducted by the University of California on canine reading programs found that students who participated in one such program, increased their reading fluency by 12-30%.
Be on the lookout for a consent form for your child to participate in the program. The consent forms are due November 21st.

Watch DOGS
We NEED You, Dads!
Did you not have a chance to sign up for a Watch DOGS day?? Please join us by signing up HERE!
WatchDOGS stands for “Dads Of Great Students.” The main mission of the program is to have positive male role models in our schools (showing our kids that education is important) and to have an extra set of eyes in the building to increase security and reduce bullying.
Who are WatchDOGS (Dads Of Great Students)?
WatchDOGS are fathers, grandfathers, uncles, and other father-figures who volunteer for at least one day each year at an official WATCH D.O.G.S. ® school. During the day, WatchDOGS may read and work on flash cards with students, play at recess, eat lunch with students, watch the school entrances and hallways, assist with traffic flow and any other assigned activities where they actively engage with not only their own students, but other students as well. Many school principals have reported that the mere presence of a WatchDOG dramatically reduces reports of bullying.
Heart of Haskin
Throughout the month of August and early September we provided an overview of what each core value means through our morning announcements, building assemblies, classroom read alouds, and Morning Meetings. In October, we focused on Growth Mindset.
During the month of November we will be focusing on Responsibility.
Responsibility is being dependable, keeping promises, and honoring your commitments.
Parent Teacher Conferences
What: Our annual conferences are an essential opportunity to collaborate with your child's teacher regarding his/her progress in school. Conferences are an excellent opportunity to strengthen the connection that has already been established between the school and home.
When: November 20th and 21st
If you have not scheduled a time with your child's teacher, please contact them as soon as possible.
Before the conference:
- ask what they would like you to talk about with the teacher
- ask what they think the teacher will say
- ask about the things they like, don't like, their problems, and their successes
- let them know that after the conference, you will discuss what the teacher said
Reflect and think about things that you'd like to discuss with your child's teacher.
Keep an open mind. Remember that both you and the teacher want to help your child succeed.
- Ask to see your child’s work. There’s no better way to see how your child is progressing.
- Ask the teacher to explain anything you don’t understand. Every profession has its own jargon, which can be hard to understand.
- Sum up what you think has been said. Make sure you and the teacher agree on any decisions you have made about your child. If necessary, ask to meet again.
- Ask for the best way to contact the teacher. E-mail? Phone?
Share the following information about your child with the teacher:
- Favorite subjects
- Outside interests and hobbies
- Any medical or health needs
- Things happening at home that may affect school work- moving, divorce, new sibling, changes in schedules, etc.
- Stay in touch with the teacher.
- Contact the teacher if you think of a question you didn’t ask.
- Talk with your child. Stress the positive things the teacher said and talk about suggestions for improvement.
- Plan with your child how to carry out these suggestions
Erin's Law
ERIN'S LAW CLASSROOM PRESENTATIONS
On December 11th and 12th Haskin will host professionals from Safe Passage into our classrooms to speak with our students about Erin's Law. Please read over the information below. After reviewing the provided information, if you would like your student(s) removed from the classroom during Erin's Law presentations, please let your student(s) teacher know.
What is Erin’s Law?
Erin’s Law, or Illinois Public Act 097-1147, requires public schools to provide child sexual abuse prevention education for children in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grades.
How is Erin’s Law taught at Haskin?
In order to meet the requirements of Illinois Public Act 097-1147, Haskin utilizes a local community resource called Safe Passage. Safe Passage social workers provide age-appropriate instruction that will help students recognize unsafe situations, keep themselves safe, and how to respond to unsafe situations. This year, Safe Passage's staff will visit each classroom and deliver an in-person presentation. Common themes instructed at all grade levels include:
- Identifying safe versus unsafe or unwanted touching
- The Safety Rule About Touching (The Touching Rule): Private areas are not for others to touch, except to keep a child clean and healthy
- Understanding the difference between good and bad secrets
Any further questions regarding Erin's Law?
If you have further questions regarding Erin's Law, please click here to view additional information provided by Safe Passage. Once you've reviewed the information provided by Safe Passage, if you have additional questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact the main office at 815-786-8812. If you'd like to opt your student from Safe Passage's Erin's law presentation, please contact your student(s) teacher and let them know.
