Habits at Home
Taking the 7 Habits from School to Home and Beyond!
Welcome to Habits at Home! On this page, you'll find information on what the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People are and how we are using them through Leader in Me at Pevely Elementary. We will focus on a specific Habit on each newsletter and give you activities to incorporate in your home! We will also showcase some of the amazing leaders in our school as well as the leadership events that take place. Enjoy!
We're a Leader in Me School!
Leader in Me focuses on the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People written by Dr. Steven Covey. We have been teaching these habits to all of our students K-5th grade. These habits encourage leadership and show students that everyone has genius and is capable of doing amazing things! Ask your student how they show the 7 Habits at school and home!
Veteran's Day Assembly
The Leadership Events Action Team put together an amazing Veteran's Day Assembly for the students and staff. Students were encouraged to invite any veterans to the assembly and we had a great turn out! The assembly was completely student run, from the high school band, artwork displayed in the halls, poems read, and songs sung, the entire students, staff and guests were entertained. Great job everyone!
Artwork welcomed the veterans to our school
Students from every grade completed drawings to hang on the walls in the hallways around Veteran's Day.
Everyone did a wonderful job!
The High School band came to play and 4th grade performed their concert songs for the veterans, students and staff.
Boy Scouts and American Heritage Girls helped with the Color Guard and ceremonial events!
The boys and girls brought the flags in, read poems and stood at the doorways to welcome our guests. They did a wonderful job!
Dr. Seuss Assembly
The Leadership Events Action Team put on another great assembly for us to celebrate Dr. Seuss week! There were games for each grade to play followed by an assembly with our Hometown Heroes! The principals even got slimed by our Bravo Blackcat recipients!
Ms. Helms and Mr. Dixon got slimed by Bravo Blackcat recipients!
Hometown Heroes!
They came to have "races" eating green eggs and ham and red fish/blue fish with students!
Mrs. Mandy got in on the slime too!
Habit to Focus On: Sharpen the Saw
As we get to the end of the school year, students are experiencing more stress to do well on tests, get good grades, maintain friendships over the summer, etc. Habit 7, Sharpen the Saw, focuses on finding a balance between body, brain, heart and soul. These look different for every child and adult, but it is crucial to not overwork one part and underwork another. Sharpen the Saw comes from a story where a man was sawing down a tree and not making a lot of progress. When a passerby asked him why he didn't stop sawing to sharpen his saw, he said that he was too busy sawing. He could have been much more productive had he stopped to sharpen the saw, then continue.
As the school year comes to the final quarter, make sure your family is taking time to "sharpen the saw". You'll find that everyone will be more productive and have better attitudes when there is balance.
Some examples of how to Sharpen the Saw:
- Read a book
- Watch a movie as a family
- Arts & crafts
- Go on a walk
- Make dinner together
- Go to bed early
- Perform acts of kindness around your community
- Go out of your way to make someone smile
---The list goes on and on!
How will you sharpen the saw? We would love to know!
