Presented by: BOS Counseling Crew
Are you making the right choice for YOU?
Use this list from College for All Texans to ask yourself important questions and make note of your answers to help decide which school is the best fit for you, your needs, your priorities, etc.
First Steps
- Activate your student university account
- Check your acceptance email for instructions
- All communication from the university will now come through here including scholarship notifications
- Is anything missing from your application file?
- SAT/ACT scores- send directly from College Board or ACT website
- Meningitis vaccine- pediatrician's office, CVS, Walgreen's, CareNOW, etc.
- Housing
- On campus- have you submitted your deposit? Completed the roommate questionnaire? Made your selection by the deadline?
- Off campus- check university rules since some require freshman to live on campus
- Freshman orientation
- Sign up as soon as dates are posted to get the orientation session you want since they will fill up
- FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) qualifies you for grants, loans & scholarships
- Apply whether you think you'll qualify or not (it's a graduation requirement!)
- Select to have it sent to the universities to which you're applying (you can add or edit later)
- Filling out FAFSA will generate a SAR (Student Aid Report) which includes your EFC (estimated family contribution) to determine aid amounts from universities
Scholarships
- FAFSA first!
- Keep applying even after you're accepted
- Utilize the SchooLinks scholarship matching tool
- Check for university-specific scholarships on their website
- Network to find out about other scholarships (parents' work, church, etc.)
- Never pay for a scholarship search!
Stay Organized
Create a notebook/spreadsheet/document with at least the following info:
- University email and password
- University portal login
- Student ID#
- FAFSA ID & password

Other Tips

- Family insurance card- keep a copy handy
- Social security card- carry a copy (keep the original somewhere safe)
