Bonham Lady Warrior Athletics
January 2024 Report
Athletic Director Notes:
INTEGRITY "Doing what's right, because it's right."
Wins and losses are the most common factors used to determine a sports team as "successful" or "unsuccessful" by the general public. Bill Parcells said, "You are what your record says you are." And that may be true in college and pro sports. But at the high school level, our goal (and our responsibility) as coaches is to teach our kids about life, and the best way to prepare for it. My top priority as the leader of Lady Warrior Athletics is to establish a healthy, productive culture that allows growth and a better understanding of integrity and what it takes to be successful in society. I believe that as long as those things are the foundation of your program over a long period of time, success will follow. This month's report focuses on the "other " types of victories that make me proud to be a Purple Warrior.
Coaches vs. Cancer
On December 15th, our varsity girls' basketball team participated in Coaches vs. Cancer to raise awareness and a donation to St. Jude's. One player was selected from each team to compete in a 3-pt competition in which $300 was raised, as well as an additional $100 donation from the mother of Howe Head Coach, Ashley Anderson. Players recognized someone close to them who has battled cancer, by making signs and showing them to the crowd before the game.
Academic All-State Volleyball Selections
We are very proud to announce that all 3 of our senior volleyball players were selected to the THSCA/TGCA Academic All-State Volleyball Team. Kylee Trompler earned 2nd team honors, while Kate Bounds and Kaitlyn Capehart were selected to the Honorable Mention team. To qualify, students must have an overall average of 94 or higher throughout their 4 years of high school. Class ranking as well as SAT/ACT scores are also taken into consideration. It's an honor anytime our Bonham students qualify for state recognition.
BHS Soccer fields JV teams for the first time!
The 2023-24 soccer season marks the 10-year anniversary of its inception at BHS. During that time, we've only had enough players to form a varsity team for both boys and girls squads. This year we are proud to have enough participation to fill a JV girls team and JV boys team as well. Hats off to Coach Norman and Coach Wilson for promoting their programs and for the growth they've experienced in such a short time at the helm.
Drug Testing Success
To add to our mission of integrity in Bonham Athletics, I am proud to say that based on our drug testing results so far this year, our student-athletes are making good choices. As of Jan.12, our athletes have passed 527/530 tests. These results include all athletes in grades 7-12. Two of the three students that received a positive result are no longer in athletics.
TSS & Trails Heroes Game
On Jan. 12th we were honored to host our 3rd annual TSS & Trails basketball celebration at halftime of our varsity girls game. This is a crowd favorite, and an inspirational experience for everyone in attendance. It's one of the most special moments in our athletic year and we are so appreciative for Coach Bockman, Todd Lancaster, Amberly Kelton, and their students for making this possible.
