Greetings Charger families
We are happy to see so many of our students return during the 50/50 Learning Phase. As you can imagine, things are very different from what we are used to. However, students have done a great job of adjusting to our "new" normal by wearing their masks, keeping socially distant, washing their hands, and adapting to the changes we have made in the cafeteria for both breakfast and lunch.
Teachers are encouraged to take students outside for fresh air breaks throughout the day. Balancing between in person learning and virtual learning has been a challenge. FJH teachers are working hard to provide engaging lessons for both groups of students.
We may not always get it right, but please know we are working hard at it. Thank you for your support during this difficult time.
Proudly serving as your principal,
Dr. Thorpe

2. Before your student leaves home for school, you must check their temperature.
Instructions from school nurse to students:
1. Wear a clean mask every day to school.
2. Keep social distance as much as possible (6 feet)
3. Wash your hands often (after restroom, before lunch, after lunch, when soiled).
4. Hand sanitizer stations will be placed in hallways if needed.
Students who come to school without a mask will be asked to contact a parent or guardian to either bring a mask or pick the student up. Thank you for your cooperation.
Counselors Corner
The week of October 12-16, we will be offering for virtual students to come into the building to take their NWEA assessment, which consists of a math and reading test. NWEA is a research based standardized assessment that measures student growth and proficiency. We use NWEA scores to determine student placements, as well as track students’ progress over the years. Though your student has opted to remain 100% virtual, we would still like to gather this important data from them. The dates are as follows:
- If your student’s last name begins with A-K: October 12th or 13th from 8-10:30 am
- If your student’s last name begins with L-Z: October 14th or 15th from 8-10:30 am
Students will follow all social distancing and safety protocols when they enter the building. They will need to wear a mask at all times, and will sit every other seat in the LGI. They can be dropped off at the main entrance at 8 am and will need to be picked up whenever they finish their tests, or at 10:30 at the latest. There is no time limit on this assessment, so if they do not finish within this timeframe, they will need to come back the next morning to finish it.
Please have all students bring their iPad with them to use.
Thank you, and please let us know if you have any questions.
Mrs. Gal, Counselor
Calling all Brainiacs
The 2020 Academic Team's season has officially begun. Participants practice in several competitions each year, and while this year will look very different, it will be just as fun. Academic Team is like a sports team, so there is commitment. But because we meet all year, we are very flexible. This means that you can be a member of the team and yet also participate in other activities.
Although we have already started our practices, more are welcome to join. We meet after school on Tuesdays from 3:15 – 4:00 via Zoom. Occasionally our Zooms might take longer as they will be competitions. The meeting times may change due to school schedules changing, student preference, and the coaching of various teams.
If interested, please email one or both of the two coaches; mrandall@hse.k12.in.us, melsheikh@hse.k12.in.us. We will send back the code link and password to the Academic Team Zoom. We are looking forward to a EXCELLENT year!

We will use this list to send out only staff appreciation sign-ups and other volunteer opportunities. By adding your name there's no pressure to sign up either, it's just to receive the sign-ups. Please use the link to add your name:

We could use help to keep the concession stand open through the remainder of the volleyball season. We need 2 adults per shift and ask that you bring a mask and arrive 10 minutes before your shift for a brief orientation. One parent will handle the order window and one will handle the serving window. The FJH PTO uses funds from concessions to fund a variety of needs for both FJH students and staff. It is also a way to welcome our visiting families. You don't have to have a volleyball player to help! We appreciate your help keeping this stand open.

FJH PTO helps to provide money for Camp Tecumseh, funds to academic departments for subscriptions and supplies, staff appreciation, and student spirit. The majority of our funding comes from concession stands at sporting events and after-school activities. That was before COVID-19. This year looks different and, honestly, we are still figuring out how different. But we do know that we still want to be there for our teachers, staff, and students. No matter what, we want to be able to show our amazing students, staff, and teachers that together, we got this – whatever “this” looks like. But we need your help. No gimmicks or flashy themes, just an earnest request. No catalog sales or walk-a-thons, just the click of a button. Any amount you can give will impact our school. Every donation is appreciated. The FJH PTO is a 501(c)(3) organization. Donations are tax-deductible.
