The Whitesides Post
October 2, 2023
Did You Know That...
- Research shows that too many absences - excused or unexcused - can keep students from succeeding in school and life. How many are too many? 10% of the school year - that's 18 missed days or 2 days a month - can knock students off track. This is chronic absenteeism.
- Only 17% of students considered chronically absent in kindergarten and 1st grade were reading proficiently in the 3rd grade.
- A high school graduate makes $1 million more than a dropout over a lifetime.
- ATTENDANCE MATTERS!
Parent/Teacher Conferences
BOO TO THE FLU: Flu shots will also be available on October 4th from 2:00-6:00 p.m. in the Activity Center at the school.

Halloween Parade
I know it's early mentioning our Halloween parade but wanted to give you a heads-up, as you may be looking at Halloween costumes well in advance. Teachers will need to know what/who your child will dress up as by Friday, October 13th.
Students should come dressed in costume and will remove it after the parade. If it's a costume that doesn't distract from learning (i.e., wearing overalls for a farmer costume, etc.), students can leave it on the remainder of the day.
To ensure the parade is a positive experience for students and a tradition we continue, please carefully note the following restriction on costumes.
*Students may not dress up as an ethnic or cultural group. Culture is not a costume. In respect to the Native American view, students cannot dress up as Pocahontas, Sacagawea, Sitting Bull, etc. This is cultural appropriation and is inappropriate.
*Skin color cannot be altered in any way.
*No masks.
*Costumes cannot be gory or threatening.
*No costumes that depict illegal substances.
*No hand-held accessories (i.e., wands, weapons, etc.)
*No strapless costumes or mid-drifts. Underwear should not be visible.
*Costumes should be fun and exciting, not political or offensive.
If you are unsure about a particular costume, please feel free to contact Ms. Schulz or your child's teacher.
Parents should not come dressed in costume.
We will live stream our parade for those that aren't able to make it. In case of inclement weather, we will still live stream the parade so parents can watch at home.
