A Message from the Principal
I hope the New Year is off to a great start for you and your family. January and February are my favorite months to observe the academic growth our students are making. It seems like the “lights come on” at this time of year. It is so exciting to see the improvements they are making in reading, writing, and math, as well as with social and motor skills.
Students will be taking the DIBELS reading assessment January 14 -17. You will be receiving information about their skill level in several reading areas soon. In addition, first graders will be taking the STAR Math Assessment. These assessments help us know how we are doing as we work toward our goals to have all students performing at or above grade level.
Report cards will be sent home at the end of this month. We have worked diligently to have the report cards be user friendly and easy to read. That being said, if you have any difficulty interpreting the information provided, please contact your child’s teacher.
You will receive two report cards this year, one in January and one in June. In addition to report cards, we hold parent/student/teacher conferences in October and March. Remember, you are always welcome to make an appointment to meet with your child’s teacher at any time of the year.
I wish you all a very Happy New Year 2020! If there is anything we can help you with at school please let us know.

Naming the New Elementary School
As you may know, our district is building a new elementary school! One of the first items of business is to choose a name. Our district is forming a naming committee, which will include a parent and teacher from each of our elementary schools. The committee will do the work of paring the names down, then sending the final names to the school board for final selection. If you are interested in being considered for this committee, please send me your name, email address, and phone number. The names will be chosen by lot.
If you are interested in participating in this process please let Julie Bartlett know of your interest The deadline for this is January 16, 2020.

Lost and Found
Our lost and found closet is full of student coats. If your child is missing theirs please feel free to stop by Discovery. We collected all of the coats prior to winter break and bagged them up. We will hold these coats until the end of January. If they are not picked up by the end of January we will donate the coats to a local charity. We simply don't have space to store them all year. If your child loses a coat in January we will hold the coat until the end of the year.
A Message from our Nurse
Eyeglass Drive
Martin Luther King Jr. believed in helping others. At Discovery we celebrate Martin Luther King's legacy by acts of kindness. This month, in cooperation with the Fife Lions Club we are collecting used eyeglasses. The glasses will go to the Northwest Lions Eyeglasses Recycling & Distribution Center. Then they will be shipped to a country in need of eyeglasses. Students who bring in one or more pairs of eyeglasses will receive a bracelet for their kindness. Our collection dates are Jan. 17 to the end of the month.

Inclement Weather
The weather in Western Washington can be very unpredictable! In the event of a school closure or late start, the Fife School District sends out an automated call to every family within a very short period of time after the decision is made. Remember to always check our website or the morning news on TV or radio if you have any questions about school schedule changes. Our website is updated frequently and is the most efficient way to inform you of important information. (fifeschools.com)
Please help us by not calling the school unless you have an emergency. The phone lines can become bogged down. Remember to provide us your phone number when ever it changes.
On 2 hour late start days: we do serve lunch soon after school begins, but there will be no breakfast served
