Nike Scout News February 2024
Check out what's happening at Nike
Happy Friday afternoon Nike Families,
Wow! February is finally here and we are wrapping up a FULL week of school. It was great to see everyone's smiling faces every day this week. There is a LOT going on in February!
We are fast approaching the 100th day of school! We hope you are excited about the progress your child has made so far this year.
We have a few fun days planned for next week.
The 100th Day of School is February 8th- We would like to invite the students to dress up like they are 100 years old. Get creative with glasses, hair, and outfits. It's a lot of fun!
The 101st Day of School is February 9th- To celebrate the 101st day of school, we would like to invite the students to dress up like a Dalmatian. There is another option listed above on the District Wide Spirit Week. Feel free to either dress as a Dalmatian or wear red.
Feb. 11th- Love Your Pet Day
Send a picture of your pet to spettus@mvr3.k12.mo.us and we will post a picture of your pet in the Nike foyer during the month of February.
From Ms. Raeker
Helping others and having a sense of community can improve our mental health. When we help others, especially those in our community, it gives us a sense of belonging and makes us feel good about ourselves. To promote a sense of community at Nike Elementary, we will be hosting a food drive for our Little Food Pantry. Last year, students collected nearly 900 food items to stock Nike’s Little Food Pantry which is located near the parking lot at Nike Elementary. Currently, the food pantry is getting stocked with just over a 100 food items each week. While we are happy the pantry is being utilized, we need your help in keeping the pantry stocked. We will be holding a food drive the week of February 12th and would love your help! We will be asking for donations of specific food items that are more useful and popular in the pantry. See the attached flyer for more information. Thanks for making Nike Elementary a great community!

DEVELOPING HEALTHY HABITS AS A FAMILY
The best place for children to learn about living a healthy lifestyle is at home.
The lessons learned can be reinforced at school, but will have the most impact when practiced daily at home.
Families can encourage children to be more active by having them participate in family activities as well as sports. Along with physical activity, there are other important health-related lessons to teach your children— and to reflect in your own life!
Consider making the following actions part of your family’s healthy lifestyle.
Cut back on TV, computer, and video game time. Less time spent on these activities leaves more time for movement!
Take a family walk or bike ride
Play with your children. It will be healthy for all of you, both physically and emotionally.
Make homework a priority. Provide a quiet time and place for doing homework. Talk to your child’s teacher to make sure your child is keeping up with classroom work
Plan to eat a balanced, healthy dinner together as a family. If schedules don’t allow for dinner together every night, make a goal to have at least two dinners together every week
Make sure you and your children get enough sleep. Choose a reasonable bedtime that allows for 9 to 12 hours of sleep each night for a school-aged child.
Our health is an important factor in our quality of life. Children who are healthy learn better, have more positive interactions, and have a better chance for success in life.
As a parent, you have a lot of power to provide your children with the basic knowledge and practices they need for the rest of their lives.
MUSIC
Third and Fourth grades are preparing a performance entitled "We're Making Music!" on March 21 at 7 p.m.
If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me through email at rfenelon@mvr3.k12.mo.us or through the ClassDojo Messenger.
Art
Greetings from the art room! The end of January was full of paint and clay! First graders tried out a new kind of paint that we call “tempera cakes.” It has amazing color so we try to stay clean with paint shirts.
We have more art fun planned for February and can’t wait to share it with you!
Here’s a glimpse into our clay projects:
Library
Fourth graders will be doing several lessons on summarizing information and taking notes. Then we will do a short research project on famous African Americans for Black History month.
In February- third graders are continuing to work on the five reference sources. The five reference sources we are working on are dictionary, thesaurus, online encyclopedia, atlas and almanac.
For storytime with the K-2 classes, we will be the last of our Show Me Readers. We have been working on reading the ten Show Me Readers for a while and when we finish, classes will vote for their favorite book.
PE
PE for 2-4th grades is starting to get geared up for the fitness test. Students will participate in the pacer test, sit up test, push up test, and the sit and reach. Scores are recorded for 4th grade compared to 2nd and 3rd grade who just practices the tests to get familiar with them.
Intramural Hockey starts for 3rd and 4th grade on February 21st. Make sure that if you have a child wanting to play, they turn in their liability form!
If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to reach out and email me at dmissey@mvr3.k12.mo.us
Title Reading
Each child made reading goals and determined 5 steps on how they are going to achieve their reading goals. I am so excited to see so much progress from the beginning of the school year to now. Students are really excited to graph their reading progress and determine next steps. We continue to focus on the 5 components of reading. Please help your child with bringing their reading bag to class daily so they are prepared for class and continue to read at home to continue to work towards developing a love for reading. This month we will have a celebration for students who receive Title 1 services to celebrate their reading progress and continuing to complete their reading log.
