What's your ONE WORD for 2023?
Think of your ONE word like a fish hook from which all the year suspends. It represents your mindset; a combination of values, integrity, goals and desire to show up in a way that feels good, aligning with what really truly matters to you now.
For over three decades, since 1993, when I was in training and development as a regional educator with Matrix Essentials, I learned to craft a ONE word yearly practice. I had a great boss who taught me how to set goals and stay focused, and we led a great team to do the same.
I've held this intention practice of synthesizing the upcoming year to ONE WORD ever since! Imagine suspending an entire year of action and intent upon one idea thread, one word. It's a very powerful practice.
Choosing one word is different from a "new years resolution" that often fails. Reason being, often these are based on specific goals that aren't achievable because they don't match our values. ie: a big house, fancy car, ultra-fit body might "look" like what we "think" we want but in actuality we might want validation, connection or sense of freedom.
Honing in on the FEELING of an outcome is very different than acquiring a thing. Not to say things aren't good goals to go for... Go for it! If you really want something. However-- it's pertinent to first know ourselves to know IF these things are merely an attempt to compensate for a loss verses bringing us closer to the feeling we truly desire. Subtle huge difference.
Check in with yourself... what's the feeling you need/want more of this year? It's subtle. Listen deeply for clues to what you honestly need more of. That's your one word!
My word this year is PORTAL; gateway to expanded awareness. For me, it's about opening doorways and relationships to exponential sustainable growth. It's time to serve more people, to help them in ways that only creativity, compassion and coaching can do collectively, and that I'm uniquely gifted to offer.
Even as I'm writing this I just received a call to speak and facilitate a program integrating creative process for community development and inclusion to reduce stigma and improve the lives of leaders, staff and community living with and working with those living with mental illness. We never know what magic is round the bend!
PORTAL for me is as much about serving more people, as it is about me improving my game. I'm a life-long-learner too. Do you know what I do when I think I know but see evidence around that maybe I don't? I hire a coach. It's been three years since I did. We start this week! How about you?
What action can help you open a new door in '24?
More people need to know I'm here to help them through difficult conversations, through uncertainty at work and in life. More people need to know I'm uniquely skilled at both leadership and life/wellness and that HR has funding to pay for coaching, speaking and facilitation of engaging experiences with me. Did you know this? Did you know I offer a sliding scale and scholarships too? Need help, just ask.

Put your word where you can see daily. Challenge yourself to say "YES" to things and people that help you stay aligned, and "NO" to what doesn't. You don't need to have everything perfect. Stay in alignment with what matters most to you. What's your ONE WORD for 2024?
