Dr. Greer: Sliding into Spring Break
The warmer weather we have had at times this month has me wondering if the opportunity to call my very first snow day is slipping by. I truly was looking forward to that surprise and delight, as I know it is something our students treasure. I can’t believe that spring is quickly approaching and our first school year together is absolutely flying by!
If we don’t get a snow day, keep in mind that Spring Break is on the horizon, and it is a great time to reenergize. My plans usually include spending time at home, most likely watching my three boys master their latest recipes. During Winter Break, my kitchen was full of the remnants of DIY Crunch Wraps they made together after watching a TikTok tutorial. I believe their interest in cooking stems from my lack of interest in cooking, so they try to make up for that, which I do appreciate.
As a mom, I believe that gifts of time with my kids, like snow days and Spring Breaks, have been some of the most precious memories. I will keep my eyes peeled for that first snow day opportunity, but if spring rushes in, I wish you a Spring Break full of quality time with your precious children.

School board approves updated member district map in accordance with Kansas statute
The Maize Board of Education on Feb. 13 approved updated boundaries for its three board member districts, which are used for board member elections and are not tied to school attendance boundaries for students.
Kansas law requires the resident population of board member districts to each be within 5 percent of the mean population of the entire district, a balance that must be reexamined with every census. With the help of demographic firm RSP and Associates, board members selected the option that provides the most balance between the three districts in terms of population distribution. The new map redistributes about 2,300 people between all three districts to reach a variance of no more than 2.7 percent between all districts.
No elementary school boundary change planned for 2023-24 school year
Maize USD 266 leaders do not plan to make any major changes to the way Maize USD 266 elementary school students are placed in the district’s five elementary schools for the 2023-24 school year. Demographic firm RSP, which the district hired for an enrollment and boundary analysis, was originally scheduled to present to the board in February. The firm needed more time to conduct its research, so RSP is expected to present its findings later this spring. The district’s primary focus with RSP data will be to discuss long-term planning in relation to growth projections. Click here to read more.
