AUSD CONNECTION
NEWS FROM ALHAMBRA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT
VOLUME 2, ISSUE 2 - AUGUST 11, 2023
MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
Dear AUSD Community,
I am filled with so much pride and joy as we finish up the first week of the 2023-24 school. As I visited each Alhambra Unified School District site, I saw students, families, teachers, and staff members excited for the journey that lies ahead of us this year.
This year, AUSD will continue to prioritize excellence in education, working collaboratively with parents and educational partners, and fostering a safe and inclusive environment where every student can thrive. During the summer and this early part of the school year, we have already seen several students and groups excel. Through this newsletter, you will read about impressive accomplishments and achievements of our students and employees. There will, no doubt, be many more celebrations throughout the year.
Our classrooms and campuses are once again filled with the sounds of curiosity, the exchange of ideas, and the spark of creativity. With our extended summer programs this year, we leaned heavily on our maintenance and facilities staff to prepare our campuses in less time than they usually have. They worked tirelessly to ensure our facilities were in impeccable shape for the start of the school year. I want to take a moment to extend my heartfelt appreciation for their dedication, attention to detail, and hard work to ready our school sites to welcome our students back into clean, vibrant and welcoming spaces on Tuesday morning.
Connection and collaboration will be key to our students’ success. I encourage all parents to actively engage in your school community: Attend Back-to-School night and parent-teacher conferences, participate in school events, monitor your child’s progress regularly, volunteer if you are able…and PLEASE join your local PTA or PTSA. Your involvement and partnership plays a crucial role in shaping the educational journey of our students and contributes to the collective success of AUSD.
Together, we will continue to cultivate an environment where every student can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Thank you for your dedication, partnership, and continued support. I look forward to a successful and enriching 2023-24 school year!
Warmest regards,
Denise R. Jaramillo, Ed.D.

Oath of Office & Communication Items
There were no staff reports at the August 8th BOARD MEETING, but we recognized and honored several individuals and groups including:
- Our Student Board Member (Justin Wang) and Board Member Alternate (Kaitlyn Cao) took their Oath of Office and were commended for their dedication to ensuring student voices are heard. (See below for highlights from their Swearing-In Ceremony and the reception in their honor.)
- Justin Wang introduced the current Student Advisory Council (SAC) members. Justin will serve as SAC Chairperson and Kaitlyn will serve as SAC Vice Chairperson. They will lead the monthly SAC meetings to discuss important issues and gather input to help District leaders as they make decisions that impact the high schools.
- We were honored to have Assemblymember Mike Fong administer the Oath of Office to Justin and Kaitlyn. Assemblymember Fong also presented the District with a check for $1 million in state funding to improve our athletic facilities.
- The Board of Education also thanked Steve Perry, President of the Alhambra Educational Foundation (AEF), who reached out to Assemblymember Fong and advocated on behalf of the District to obtain the generous funding. Mr. Perry was also recognized for his ongoing dedication and hard work to support AUSD through his work with AEF.
- The Board of Education recognized AHS senior Nicolas Quach, who was recently honored by Congressmember Dr. Judy Chu as the 2023 Youth of the Year for her Congressional District.
