As the seasons change, our students and student athletes are involved in a host of extra-curricular activities and have experienced much success since the beginning of the school year. We are proud of our students’ achievements, attendance, and their overall positive contributions to our school. Building relationships with students remains at the forefront of our mission as a school and to assist students in engineering their futures no matter what it may be. We encourage you to read more about the events from this past month, and to be apprised of events and information that are forthcoming. Best wishes!

Lycoming County Chamber of Commerce - Student of the Quarter
Please join me in congratulating Cy Cavanaugh, who was chosen as Loyalsock's Student of the Quarter for the 2022-23 school year.
The Williamsport/Lycoming Chamber of Commerce oversees the “Student of the Quarter” program for all of the local districts. The “Student of the Quarter” program is designed to honor students from the local schools for their academic excellence, character, and positive impact on our school district.
Cy is the first of three seniors that the LTHS scholarship committee will have the honor of choosing as a "Student of the Quarter" for the 2022-23 school year.
Please be sure to congratulate Cy on this honor when you see him!
Commonwealth University of PA
Recently, you may have learned of an agreement that several regional school districts, including Loyalsock Township, have entered into with the recently formed Commonwealth University of PA (which is a combination of Lock Haven, Bloomsburg, and Mansfield Universities). You can learn more about agreement as covered by WNEP-16. Loyalsock Township HS has a history of sending multiple students per year to each of these post-secondary institutions. This new scholarship opportunity may be a very helpful step in families being able to afford the cost of a college education for their student.
We wanted to share specific information for all of our students, particularly our current senior Class of 2023, to this exceptional opportunity for students and families to consider. Beginning in the Fall of 2023, Loyalsock Township HS graduates will have the ability to receive up to $7,000 per year in a renewable scholarship if students choose to attend one of the three university in Commonwealth’s system. The scholarships are tiered, and are dependent on a student’s cumulative weighted average and GPA and can award many students with financial scholarship assistance.
What is important to note is that students must apply by December 15 of their senior year. You can learn more about the Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania by reviewing their website.

Counselor Update
Counselors in the Classroom
Mrs. Rippey visited semester 1 and year-long English 9 classes for two blocks at the end of October to teach students about course options and educational opportunities available throughout their high school experience. Students completed a tentative 4-Year College and Career Plan, including projected high school coursework that aligns with their interests and future goals. Students also participated in an activity in Smart Futures, our district’s career planning and portfolio platform, that had them reflect on their possible career path post high school.
Mrs. Rippey also informed and instructed these same classes on the Pennsylvania Pathways to Graduation, a graduation requirement in addition to the 28 course credits that students must successfully earn. These pathways provide alternatives for high school students to demonstrate readiness for postsecondary success. Four new pathway options have been added to the previous requirement of demonstrating proficiency across all three high school Keystone exams. The Pennsylvania Pathways to Graduation now more fully illustrate college, career, and community readiness for all students.
These lessons will be repeated for students enrolled in English 9 during the second semester.
Ms. Watkins has been providing classroom-based support in Senior Seminar for the past several weeks for students applying to college. This includes general questions about applying, Common App specific questions, transcript requests, and submitting the necessary forms to their college profiles. Students have the opportunity to seek Ms. Watkins for any future needs by requesting an individual meeting or emailing her at kwatkins@loyalsocklancers.org.

Pumpkin Experiments
Mr. Reinhart performed the "Self-Carving Pumpkin" demonstration in his chemistry classes to celebrate Halloween this year. To start the chemical reaction, he mixed together calcium carbide and water in a small cup. This cup was immediately placed inside the pumpkin. This combination of reactants produces acetylene gas, which in the presence of oxygen gas, creates an explosive mixture. After an adequate amount of time had passed, Mr. Reinhart inserted a lit wooden splint on the backside of the pumpkin to ignite the acetylene gas inside. The force from this explosion was enough to project pieces of the pumpkin's face toward the crowd of students on the other side of the room!!! Watch until the end and see how excited Mr. Reinhart is about Chemistry experiments!

A GREAT FUNDRAISING PROGRAM!
Do you love shopping? Do you want to start Christmas shopping early? Want to make your life easier?
Buy what you normally buy. Spend what you normally spend. Help us raise funds by purchasing gift cards for the stores that you use regularly or as gifts for that fast approaching Christmas season. Gift cards have become one of the most popular Christmas gifts. Now you can take advantage of “one stop shopping” from over 80 different stores in the convenience of your home. Another great thing about buying gift cards through our fundraiser, there is no surcharge, service fee, or shipping fees: if you purchase a $25 Applebee’s gift card, you pay $25. For each card sold, the vendor donates a percent of the gift card sales; for example, one $25 Applebee’s gift card purchased would raise a $2.00 donation, the percent of vendor donation will be on the purchase form. Other examples of vendors are Amazon, Bath & Body Works, Starbucks, Target, and Buffalo Wild Wings. Gift cards are easy, convenient, and a real timesaver. Please consider helping raise funds for the Class of 2025, see a sophomore class member in November and the beginning of December to purchase.

A three-act play, written by Thornton Wilder in 1938 and licensed by Samuel French.
The story follows the small town of Grover's Corners through three acts: "Daily Life," "Love and Marriage," and "Death and Eternity." Narrated by a stage manager and performed with minimal props and sets, audiences follow the Webb and Gibbs families as their children fall in love, marry, and eventually - in one of the most famous scenes in American theatre - die.
The show includes 20 cast members, a student stage manager, and many student crew members from grades 9-12. Students also contribute to sets, costumes, advertising, and production.

October/November Featured Coach ~ Kathleen Popowycz, Girls Volleyball
Congratulations to Coach Kathleen Popowycz for being selected as our Feature coach for October/November. Please take a moment to read through Kathleen's coaching biography.
"I've been coaching the volleyball team since its early stages in the fall of 2019, when there was no official team, just a group of 8th graders who had discovered a passion for the sport and wanted someone to help them learn in their spare time. We've come a long way in a very short time. We just wrapped up our second official season, and many of those same athletes (now 11th graders) have helped build a program that is a force to be reckoned with, rallying with and defeating teams that have been established for decades.
Some highlights of our two seasons include earning our first win as an official program in the fall of 2021, seeing our players earn spots on the District IV Stat Leader page throughout the season (five of our Varsity players are currently stat leaders), and hosting summer camps with Susquehanna University's volleyball team.
This sport is a joy to coach, and I'm so proud of the progress the players have made in so few seasons. It has not been an easy journey starting a program, but it has been so rewarding to see the sport gain traction at Loyalsock. Coach McNett and I feel lucky to work with a group of dedicated athletes and their families, who always go the extra mile. The future is bright for Loyalsock Volleyball!"
Please be sure to congratulate Kathleen if you see her!
Featured Senior Athletes ~ Fall Sports
Football
Cy Cavanaugh
A two-year captain and two-way starter, Cy has embodied what we hope for in a Loyalsock football player throughout his career. He has had tremendous impact on the football team as the leader of the group as well as a mentor to many. On the field Cy is our starting all conference Middle linebacker with play call duty for the defensive unit. On the offensive side of the ball Cy stepped into the tight end and fullback role for our offense as a senior. His steadfast demeanor and willingness to sacrifice for the team has created a tight bond within the group.
Girls Tennis
Elle Campana started at number 2 in doubles this season. She always brought a positive energy to all practices and matches.
Cross Country
Steven Ling
Although Steven is not a Senior, he has exemplified leadership qualities that deserve recognition this season. Steven was the captain of the boys cross country team and had a stellar junior season. Steven has been a member of the cross country program since 7th grade. Steven ran under 20 minutes for the majority of the season and was the top finisher for Loyalsock. He hit a new personal best at the District IV Championship Meet with a time of 19:00.9. The Loyalsock Cross Country Program looks forward to Steven’s senior season next year!
Golf
Jaden Rankinen
Jaden was a senior on the golf team. Jaden had a successful senior season as he qualified for the individual district tournament at Williamsport Country Club. The tournament is a 2 day event, with only players who qualify in the top 20 from the first day results get to continue playing. Jaden had a solid first day of the tournament and earned the opportunity to compete on the final day of districts. With only the top 6 advancing to the state tournament, Jaden did not shoot a low enough score on the second day to advance to states, but just making the second day of districts is a great accomplishment for him!
Girls Soccer
Natalie Bognaski
Natalie has served our program in a variety of roles over her career. Natalie’s positive personality has served her teammates, coaches, the Loyalsock youth, and the community well. She encourages everyone around her to do their best! Natalie will put in all the work and effort to get to where she wants to be. Her hard work over the past 12 months paid off when she scored her first-ever varsity goal! It has been a great honor to coach Natalie over the course of her career.
Boys Soccer
Tyler Wescott
Tyler is a true competitor and a force to be reckoned with. Tyler is one of the best ball shooters I have ever seen, with an excellent technical and tactical understanding of the game. Tyler has an extremely high work ethic and isn’t afraid to do hard things. In addition, Tyler is a Captain of our program. He is a disciplined and positive teammate, consistently encouraging everyone around him to push harder and give a little more. Tyler is a 4-year varsity athlete with 14 game-changing goals and 20 assists combined and, more importantly, a 4.0 GPA. Tyler is an outstanding young man, and it has been an absolute honor to Coach him.
Volleyball
Giana Lewis and Ryleigh Liebersohn
Giana and Ryleigh were our two senior volleyball managers. Due to injuries sustained before the season, they stepped into other roles and made themselves indispensable members of the team. They recorded stats in real time at every game, uploaded them to spreadsheets online, and helped facilitate practices. Both are wonderful volleyball players and wonderful people, and we will miss them next season!
Varsity Cheer
Brooke Grieco
Brooke demonstrated tremendous effort and growth throughout the years and has brought a great energy to the team. She has that combination of a positive attitude and the belief that she can always improve that's rare in a high school student. Brooke has shown great potential since she was a freshman. Even at that young age, she exhibited strong leadership skills and determination. Now a senior, she is one of this year’s captains. Her ability to bring a group of students together to work towards one goal is unmatched. Brooke’s strong belief in her ability to acquire new skills and improve through practice is something hard to come by. She works hard at motivating her teammates, making her hard work contagious. Brooke is a three time “All-American” cheerleader and is planning on cheering in college. She is one of this year’s most valuable athletes and will be sorely missed next year.
