Welcome Back!
The BIG E!
On Friday, September 17th, agriscience FFA students will board a bus to attend the Big E, a multi-state agricultural fair in West Springfield, MA (www.thebige.com). Students will hand out boutonnieres they create to visitors. In advisory classes, students were led by their teachers in a step-by-step lesson in creating the boutonnieres using baby's breath and carnations.
Students will also be competing in an individual floral display.

Gardening for Pollinators
Article was written by Alli Buckley, Science Lab Assistant
Being a UCONN Master Gardener since 2013 has been one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever had. Every year we are required to serve time working in the local extensions diagnosing plant problems and helping out in our communities with outreach projects approved by our coordinators.
Last year, due to Covid-19, it was especially challenging to find an idea and although I have had success with larger projects and volunteer groups, I decided to focus on the smaller things that make people happy, especially our educators, who have gone above and beyond expectations throughout the pandemic.
The pollinator garden picture above was realized with the help of generous grants from Washington Supply and Coast of Maine compost products. The seeds were donated thru the Connecticut Master Gardeners seed project. The seeds were watered by Ms. Macsweeney’s grade six class and by paraprofessional, Allen Eddy, with his summer school students.
Many thanks to all.

Senior Project Spotlight
Camden Schmus - Building a Race Car
After attending Shepaug for middle and high school, Camden Schmus began his senior year at Bristol Tech learning about the automotive trades. He explains his decision: "I enrolled [at Bristol] because I wanted a technical school. It's a better option for me, and I can save money by attending because you have to pay for the standard after-school automotive programs. I know I want to work in this field, so doing this will give me a head start on my life." Camden acknowledges that he has had to discipline himself to manage the responsibility of his technical training and to fulfill the senior project, a Shepaug graduation requirement. "Honestly," he says, "it's been a little stressful. But senior projects are supposed to be something you learn from. It's supposed to be fun, and it will help me for the future, so it sort of checks all my boxes."
Cam's plan is to build a race car compliant with NHRA (National Hot Rod Association) regulations to ensure safety. "You can't make a pass (race) unless you're fully compliant," he shares. His car is a burgundy 1986 Monte Carlo SS. Cam meets every week with his teacher, Dr. Youngblood, by phone and Facetime. He promises to keep us all updated as he embarks on this journey!
Caroline Kibbe - Mathletes
For Caroline Kibbe's senior project, she is creating math competitions, to be held at Shepaug Valley School, for the Berkshire League, and other public and private schools in Litchfield County; she's hoping to become a partner with FCML, Fairfield County Math League. Other schools, along with Shepaug, would come to practice difficult and unique math problems in preparation for the competitions that would occur every month. Additionally, Caroline hopes to fundraise at the event for Shepaug's Mathletes Club by selling pizza and snacks. So far, Nonnewaug has already agreed to attend the competitions.
I, Robot
Starting the year off as young engineers, Robotics I students build testing environments, while Robotics II students build automated machines to accomplish specific tasks.
