Pancakes with the Principal serves as reminder to students that every DAE Counts!
You could say serving pancakes on state headcount day is just "buttering up" students in order to get them to come to school. But at Davison Alternative Education, "Pancakes with the Principal" on the annual fall headcount is a annual rite of tradition that flows smooth as syrup.
While the event, yes, is held to encourage attendance, it is also a reminder that this small building of approximately 130 students is more like a family than a school on most days. That was evident as Principal Mr. TJ Fischhaber greeted and conversed with students as he flipped pancakes on an outdoor griddle located just outside the school entranceway. Batter up was Secretary Mrs. Connie Trombley, who took her turn at the spatula as Mr. Fish (as called by students) had to take a phone call inside the building. Also assisting with the assembly-line operation were Secretary Mrs. Robin Ostrander, Student and Family Community Liaison Ms. Jennifer Gekeler and Student Mentor Mr. Stephen Maule.
In all, 300 pancakes were made and served.
Pancakes with the Principal started several years ago with Mr. Jerry Piger, who now serves as Principal at Davison High School.
The legend of Johnny Appleseed and making applesauce at Central Elementary
Last week, first grade students at Central Elementary celebrated Johnny Appleseed week. Activities included taste testing different varieties of applies and making applesauce.
Turns out Johnny Appleseed was a real person whose name was John Chapman. An American pioneer nurseryman, Johnny introduced apple trees to large parts of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and present-day Ontario, as well as the northern counties of present-day West Virginia. Nova, Ohio, is the home to the last of the apple trees planted by Johnny Appleseed. This tree is over 170 years old and still produces tart apples that are ideal for baking and applesauce.
These pictures are from students in Mrs. Mindy Parrott's classroom.
Athletic Director Dave Beamer looking for another bid as top ambassador in Real Men Wear Pink campaign
As the District's Athletic Director, it should come as no surprise that Dave Beamer has a bit of a competitive side.
And that competitive spirit is showing as Beamer makes his bid to once again be named as one of the Top Five Ambassadors of the American Cancer Society's Real Men Wear Pink campaign. Truth be told, he wants to be number one.
"Breast cancer affects everyone - it doesn't matter if you're a man or a woman," Beamer said. "That's why I'm stepping up to fight breast cancer with all I have. Since I'm in a position to make a difference within my community, I believe I have an obligation to do so. By raising money and awareness through Real Men Wear Pink, I'm helping to save more lives from breast cancer."
Beamer has a goal to raise $2,500. You can help the cause by donating online (link below) or purchasing a Real Men Wear Pink T-shirt, available at Hilton Screeners for $15 throughout the month of October. Proceeds from the shirt sales will go to the American Cancer Society.

GSRP students celebrate "Farm Week"
Preschool students in Ms. Heidi Alcodray's Great Start Readiness Program classroom at Central Elementary participated in Farm Week this week. Students learned about animals - and even got to meet some, including Ms. Alcodray's bunny rabbits. The class also played Farm BINGO, milked cows, worked together to cover a sheep and painted pigs with mud.
Health Sciences students visit Real Bodies exhibition
Davison High School students in Mrs. Laurie Heath's Health Sciences class visited the REAL BODIES exhibit at the Sloan Museum last week. The exhibit, which runs through January 14, 2024, explores life by displaying real, perfectly preserved human bodies and more than 200 anatomical specimens.
More than a simple display of human specimens, REAL BODIES is touted to connect audiences to a deeper sense of what it means to be alive. Founded on anatomical, cultural and emotional narratives, the exhibition transforms the way we view the mysterious organism we all share - the human body - and reminds us of all the complexity and magic within us that we often take for granted.
