Superintendent's Message 9-22-23
-From The Desk of the Superintendent-
Dear ALCS families,
Happy Homecoming!
It’s been a wonderful week of celebrating in our schools. From theme days and pep rallies, to a pizza bake off (thank you North Coast Rotary), we are having lots of fun. The high school students selected “Barbie” as the theme for this year’s Homecoming. Tonight we will crown the Homecoming King and Queen prior to the start of the football game against Amherst. Go Shoremen!
I look forward to seeing all of you tomorrow at the parade which begins at 10:30 a.m. leaving the north lot (off Electric Blvd.) at Avon Lake High School. It will travel its usual route on the streets across from Bleser Park, then head down Redwood Blvd. to Avon Belden Road (SR 83) and ending back at the high school.
In addition to Homecoming, we are also celebrating our 5-Star rating on the recently released Ohio Department of Education State Report Card. Our district significantly exceeds state standards in all aspects of academic achievement. Congratulations to our students, staff and families as achievements like this truly take a village. Thank you for your continued support of student success in our district. To view the report card, click here.
I would like to give a special shout out to our National Merit Scholarship Program semifinalists, ALHS seniors Mary Bigenho, Jack Fink and Dylan Missal. These academically talented students have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,140 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $28 million that will be offered next spring. This year, program officials selected 16,000 semifinalists out of 1.3 million juniors from across 21,000 high schools nationwide. Semifinalists are chosen based on preliminary SAT scores.
We are also celebrating ALHS student Ava Molina, one of 72,000 students from across the country who earned academic honors from College Board’s National Recognition Programs. She received the National Hispanic Recognition Award. The National Recognition Programs honor the strong academic achievements of underrepresented students. They’re an opportunity for students to showcase their hard work in high school. The programs not only benefit students, but also the colleges looking to recruit diverse, talented students.
Parents, please save the dates below for two important upcoming Parent Information Nights that will take place in our district at 7 p.m. in the performing arts center at ALHS with assistance from our school resource officers, Avon Lake Police Department, the state’s Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) office, and the Department of Homeland Security.
Nov. 7: Sextortion
March 12: Internet crimes against children
Be on the lookout in your mailboxes for a postcard flier with information regarding our Building ALegacy project. We apologize as it appeared that some of the QR codes listed were not working for some residents. All of the information is on our website. Click here to access.
We recently completed another video in our series which explains the district’s permanent improvement (PI) finances and the relationship to the District’s facilities. To view the video, click here.
I hope all of you have a wonderful weekend and I wish our high school students an amazing Homecoming. Make great memories!
Thank you again for your continued support of our schools.
