International Night - January 22nd

Sunshine STEM Academy is proud to host our annual International Night, January 22 from 6-8 p.m. to coincide with the school-wide Geo Bee. International Night is a celebration of the diversity in our students and staff. “Diversity” is defined as “variety”; from the United States to China, SSA embraces students of all different cultures into a welcoming academic and social environment.

During International Night, students will take a tour through the continents, stamping their passports along the way. Each continent will be represented by a different grade level. Our students and teachers have worked hard creating imaginative, dazzling displays with information and pictures on countries within their continents. At each station, authentic regional games will also be available with fun prizes provided by PVO.

To complement the displays, ethnic cuisine will also be served. Interested students can also participate in the Cultural Fashion Show and Dance Show. If you and your student are interested, please contact PVO.

We hope you will be able to join us in celebrating cultures from around the world. If you have any questions or suggestions for International Night, please contact Ms. Hewett at ahewett@sunshinestemacademy.org.

Sunshine STEM Academy 5th grade Students Receive Portable Computers

5th grade students have built their Raspbery Pi computers last week. We will start working on SCRATCH Block-Programming. We hope to develop exciting SCRATCH animations in Computer Classes with our 5th graders by the end of 3rd Quarter.

Kindergarten looks forward to moving into Addition with ten frames

This week started our long unit on addition and the class is absolutely loving it! Addition allows us to participate in a lot of fun games and centers. We have done a lot of partner work, using dice, counters and dominoes, to find the largest sum. Kindergarten looks forward to moving into addition with ten frames and number lines soon.

We are having our first spelling test this week with our sight words. We are learning to spell high frequency words to better prepare for first grade and to improve our writing. As a class, we participated in a very fun, messy activity to practice spelling using shaving cream. This activity was an absolute blast! One of the Kindergarten students quoted "This is the best day of my life" due to how much fun he had :)

Sunshine STEM Academy is exciting to host the 2016 National Geographic GeoBee preliminary competition on January 22. The National Geographic GeoBee is a school, state, and nation-wide competition created by the National Geographic Society. Students in grades four through eight are eligible for this entertaining and challenging competition. With a top prize of a $50,000 college scholarship—plus other prizes—the contest is designed to encourage teachers to include geography in their classrooms, spark student interest in the subject, and increase public awareness about geography.
