An Update from Perkiomen Valley Middle School West
A Word From Mr. Creeden
I would like to wish you and yours a Happy New Year! We were excited to see the students after a nice break and we are also excited to begin a new year filled with lots of fun, learning, and excitement. Athletic competitions and musical practices resumed this week. Students also took part in Math and ELA LinkIt Benchmark Assessments this past week. The data from these assessments will better inform and assist teachers when determining learning gaps, informing their classroom instruction, and supporting individual or groups of students in and outside the classroom. This week we have our annual West Spelling Bee on Wednesday September 10th. There are also some upcoming West Home & School events such as the East/West Skating event and the Winter Wonderland Dance coming up this month. Please see the newsletter below for more details about these assessments as well as much more.

What's Up @ West
Wooden Passive Speaker for Smart Phone
Students in Dr. Weir's eighth grade Technical Education classes honed their woodworking skills by manufacturing a wooden passive speaker for their smartphones. Constructed from poplar boards, the novice woodworkers used hand saws, drill presses, band saws and drum sanders to create the initial components. After gluing the pieces together, they will finish their speakers by hand sanding and applying a coat of wax. The results are impressive!
Work?
What is "work?" The scientific definition is "the transfer of energy to an object by using a force that causes movement in the direction of the force." Students in Mrs. Herzog's eighth grade science classes were introduced to the concept of work this week. Austin Seeber demonstrated that despite how difficult it was to hold the two full gallon jugs at arm's length, he was not doing work. Picking them up from the floor demonstrated work. Work equals force x distance.
MackinVIA
MackinVIA™ is a program that makes it easy to access our school's digital resources. Students can use MackinVIA on any desktop, laptop, or mobile device with internet access. In preparation for learning how to use MSW's digital collection on MackinVIA, students in the current vector of Digital Literacy reviewed genres of books and created a Croc representing their favorite types of reading materials. Since our library is genrefied, this is a natural connection to help students learn about their interests both in print and then as a springboard into the organization of e-books and audiobooks in MackinVIA. Students will participate in multiple lessons co-taught by Mrs. Piccione, our librarian and Digital Literacy teacher, and Mrs. McCloskey, our reading specialist, in order to best utilize the valuable online resource that is MackinVIA.
Gens una sumus
Chess, which requires wit and intellect, is played by millions of people across the globe. It is one of the finest indoor games. Chess is played on a 64 square board of black and white. The aim of the game is to conquer the opposite king. On both sides, there are pawns, knights, bishops, rooks, and the queen to formulate a strategy to attack the opposite army in a war. Once the opposition king is blocked and doesn't have any option to make a move, the game ends. The West Chess Club meets every other Wednesday with adviser and eighth grade social studies teacher, Sean Murphy for friendly competition and to hone their skills. The members will take on the East club in their annual chess tournament this spring.

Attendance Announcement📢
It's that time of year again when all the absences start to pile up. Between illness and obligations there is always so much happening this time of year. Please know that we understand how life throws curveballs and sometimes absence communication is not feeling like a top priority. Please know that we are here to help! A quick email to mswattendance@pvsd.org with your student's name and a brief reason for their absence is typically all we need to get that absence excused. Please refer to the PV District Attendance Policy here - PV District Attendance for details. Always feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns as well. Don't forget to fill out trip forms for appropriate absences. Find that form on the PVSD.org website.
Happy Holidays!

Originally from California, Coach Moyano moved to the area with his wife, Denise, and their two children, Michael and Samantha in 2020. They love their new home and the opportunities to be part of the community. Coach Moyano owns a sports card shop, "What's Hot Cards & Collectibles" in Limerick, and has a passion for all sports, especially the San Francisco Giants. When asked about what brought him to PV, Coach Moyano said, "I came to PV because I'm excited about the opportunity to start a new program and tradition at the school. Wrestling is a sport that teaches lessons that the athletes will carry with them the rest of their lives, and I'm passionate about building a legacy that our student-athletes can be proud of when they graduate."

Virtual Parent Support Group
Embark Behavioral Health continues to expand our services to meet the growing need to teen and young adult mental health needs throughout our country. With incidents of depression in adolescents up by 216% since 2006 and suicide as the 2nd leading cause of death for our preteen youth, it is our responsibility to act now and act quickly. In partnership with all of you, we can reverse this youth mental health crisis and change the trajectory of the next generation.
Continuing on our mission to be the leader in driving teen and young adult depression, anxiety, and suicide rates from all-time highs to all-time lows, Embark Behavioral Health is proud to offer our FREE Monthly Virtual Multi-family Support Group. This structured group, led by a licensed clinician is open to the public (ages 18+) and assists with the challenges that many loved ones and caregivers face while caring for someone with a behavioral health concern.
Please see the flyer below for more info about Embark Behavioral Health and the free monthly virtual multi-family support group.
