Black History Month
For the month of February, students from the organization , Future Black Collegians, have been presenting narratives of prominent Black historical figures and events in the cafeteria. The students admitted that it was a bit scary talking in front of a crowd, but now it's no problem. " We are happy to share our culture and history with our peers. Plus, I've learned some things that I didn't know," said Alivia Thompson (10).
The Future Black Collegians also put together a Black history timeline in the foyer. " It took half the day to transport half the display from the library to the foyer, but it was worth it," said Mrs. Peterson, the club's sponsor.
You still have time to check out the display in the school's foyer and the rest of the display is located in the library and can be viewed before and after school.

Jason Soto Heads to State
On February 3rd, senior Jason Soto won first place in Skills competition with only three years of experience. In this lab, he was tasked to perform a haircut with style, color, design, and skill. Jason says he really does not know why he made it to first place. “I felt unprepared, but with Skills I still came out on top,” he said.
With winning this competition, Jason now advances to State competition. Jason admits he’s a bit nervous being the only one out of his class going. “I don't know what to expect and I'll be going alone,” said Soto. But lucky for Jason, he has an eye for things, that's what makes him different. He can be told to perform any haircut in an order he perfected.
Jason did not intend to be in the Barber's program, he said barbering chose him. One day I just picked up clippers and I never put them down. Jason has been cutting hair for three solid years. He says he always thought it was cool and has always liked seeing his progression with cutting hair. I would get better with every cut, which led him to where he doesn't even mess up anymore. Jason hopes to open a shop of his own. “I trust the process, that's what got me this far. I’m not going to rush into something I may not be ready for,” said Soto.
These students also competed in Skills USA and all 1st and 2nd place winners are headed to State competition in a few weeks.

Classic Wooden Bench
This bench was made by senior Rowan Vega in Christopher Luna’s construction class. It was made with leftover lumber from construction training projects. Vega woodburned and put clear coat on the bench to protect the wood. Mr. Luna's class makes commissions on projects from cutouts for art class, to a new conference table for the front office. All proceeds go towards competition equipment and the construction senior trip. If you are interesting in purchasing this bench contact cluna@swisd.net
If your student is a 9th or 10th grader, chances are that they have come home talking about MAP testing. The MAP test is administered 3 times a year to our English 1, English 2 and Algebra classes, and gives our teachers a good picture of student growth. They use this data to plan lessons and needed interventions in the classroom. Each student receives an individual report, and your students have just finished up the winter testing window. English 1, English 2 and Algebra 1 teachers are currently meeting with their students to review growth, and sending home an individual report. If you have any questions on your child's growth, please reach out to their specific teacher, they can assist you with this information. The MAP report also gives us a good idea of our projected scores on the EOC tests. Check out the information below for a composite English projection and Algebra 1 projection.
