OLVCS Updates
October 12th, 2023
Dear OLVCS Parents and Friends,
Thank you, thank you, thank you! Start to finish OLV Day & Walk-A-Thon were a tremendous success.
Our school is indebted to our Walk-A-Thon chair, Marlena Vendemia, and her incredible committee: Sondra Allen, Ashley Bartley, Jen Braum, Caitlin Dare, Mary Boyle, Paul Fritzsche, Amy Gravine, Betsy Kraft, Heather Lukac, Julie Lunn, Monika Manter, Malissa Martin, Sarah Miller, Julieann Reed, Melanie Smith, Maria Spencer, Kristin Syzmanski, Kristin Thelen, Laura Yartz.
I would like to also thank our wonderful faculty and staff for all they did to make the event outstanding! It was humbling to see the dedication of the Walk-A-Thon committee, the turn-out of our families and finally the amount raised to support our school.
I have another ask. We are in desperate need of substitute teachers. I am working on this Update Sunday afternoon, knowing that we are short tomorrow, I’ll be subbing in a classroom for part of the day. It is not that I don’t want to spend time with students, it's that I have quite a bit on my plate as it is.
I understand many of you work, for those that don’t please consider helping us out. Even if you can just commit to one day per week, that would be a tremendous help. In most cases you would be alerted ahead of time. Our teachers leave detailed plans, our students are well behaved, and the pay is $100/day! Sounds wonderful, doesn’t it?
If you are interested, please send me an email, and click on the link below for diocesan requirements.

Speaking of missing school, please see the graphic below from our nurse Mrs. Whitehill. It will help answer the question; should my child stay home/return today?
Make it a Great Day!

OLVCS father, Ryan Russell, Publishes Children's Book
My Annoying, Irritating, Always-in-the-way Shadow by Ryan Russell (Author and Illustrator)
Ryan Russell, wonderful husband, father to 3 amazing children, and fellow OLVCS parent, who has been battling cancer for 17 months, recently fulfilled his dream of becoming a published author and illustrator on his 41st birthday.
You can officially pre-order his children's book "My Annoying, Irritating, Always-in-the-way Shadow", from Harriman House, here. Take a look at the description of his book below, and consider ordering a copy for your family or someone you know. The family is keeping a map for the children so they can see all of the places Ryan's book is being read! Let's show this fellow OLVCS family our support!
"This topsy-turvy turn around book lets you read one story and then turn the book around to read another. The father of three young children, Ryan was inspired to write this book while undergoing treatments for Brain Cancer, because he thought it was important for his children to always know the power of perspective. It's not what happens to you, but how you react to it."
OLVCS has purchased two copies of the book for our library and a copy will be purchased for each classroom as well.
OLVCS Trunk or Treat
Our Lady of Victory Catholic School invites you to Trunk-or-Treat. Families are welcome to join us for trick-or-treating, fall snacks, and a trip to the pumpkin patch. We ask that all cars participating park in the back lot by 2:45 pm to allow traffic to be blocked off at the start of the event. Come in costume, decorate your trunk, and hand out candy! Happy Halloween!

OLVCS Athletics Updates
Crusader Volleyball Team Plays Rematches With Bellefonte and Claysburg – Kimmel
On Thursday, the OLV Volleyball Team took on the Bellefonte Red Raiders at the BHS gymnasium. The Crusaders had faced Bellefonte in the Warrior Blast tournament, so they were prepared for the Red Raiders solid serving and scrappy play. While the OLVCS A-team lost the first set 20 -25, thanks to great serves by Sophia Gilroy, the Crusaders won the second set, 25 -20. The deciding 3rd set was very tight, but despite solid play by all the OLV girls, the Red Raiders pulled ahead and won the match 13 -15. The B-team took to the court and had a few good rallies but could not pull off a set win. OLV lost both sets: 20 -25 and 19 – 25.
On Monday, the OLV Volleyball team traveled to Claysburg-Kimmel for another rematch. Claysburg – Kimmel has a very experienced A- team and was able to effectively find the weak points in the OLVCS team. The Crusaders fell in both sets: 25 – 6 and 25 -14. In the B-game, the tables were turned. The Crusaders came out victorious in both sets: 21 -25, 15 – 25.
Regular season game play is now completed for the OLVCS Volleyball Team. The team will end the season next week on Saturday, October 21st at the Dragons B-Battle Tournament at Central (Martinsburg).

Crusaders Place 3rd In In DuBois Central Catholic Tournament
By Ryan (Scoop) Suita, OLV 6th Grade Student
On Saturday, October 7, the OLV Crusaders played three games in DuBois, PA. In the first game of pool play, the Crusaders made it to the end of the game with a score 1 -1, which meant they had to continue play in a sudden death overtime. Play ended with DuBois Central Catholic School scoring a questionable goal. In the second pool play game, OLV took on Elk County Catholic School and fell again. But the Crusaders rebounded in the consolation game against a team from Bradford, winning with a final score of 4 to 1, Crusaders. This win gave the Crusaders 3rd place in the tournament.
Crusaders Tie Southern Huntingdon at 8th Grade Recognition Soccer Game
By Ryan “Scoop” Siuta
Yesterday, OLV played against Southern Huntingdon. In the first half, the Rockets scored 2 goals against the Crusaders. In the second half, OLV got on a roll and went on to score 2 goals to even the score. Goals were made by Collin Jacob and Jacob Andreyo. While there was intense play in the last few minutes of the game, the Crusaders could not get that needed goal to win. The final score was 2-2, tie.
Following the game, Coach Stec recognized each of the 8th grade players for their dedication to the team and improvement over the season. Evan Koehle was particularly singled out for his talent and play as goalie.
The Crusaders play TODAY Thursday, October 12 at 4:30 PM at Park Forest Middle School. Here are the players to watch: Evan Koehle, Aryana McCleary, Collin Jacob, Felicity Jacob, Owen Badger, and Isla Herbick. Go Crusaders!
