Big Spring High School News

On December 21st, the boy's basketball team took a trip to the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia to play against James Buchanan. Our team had an awesome experience playing in the arena and watching a Philadelphia 76ers game later that evening. The boy's basketball team topped the trip off with a 54-52 win over James Buchanan.

On January 6th, 12 Big Spring students performed in the CCMEA County Band Festival. The festival was held at Messiah College. The students are pictured with guest conductor, Dr. Jim Colonna. The following students qualified for this festival:

On January 13th, 5 students performed in the PMEA District Band. The following students qualified for this band:

During the festival, all of the students reauditioned for the chance to move on to Region V Band Festival. Congratulations to Brandon Mooney! He was selected to represent Big Spring in the Region V Band Festival. This is Mooney's second year representing Big Spring at this festival.

This year, Dakota Over represented Big Spring at the PMEA District 7 Chorus Festival. The festival took place at Susquehannock High School in Southern York County. We had 3 of our choral students, Kaylee Enck, Grace Patterson, and Dakota Over, contribute to the improvement of our scores from last year.

With the first semester ending, Keystone testing began. The keystone dates were as follows:

January 8th - Literature

January 9th - Biology

January 17th - Algebra

January 16, 18, 19, 22 - Make-ups

Due to the early dismissal on January 8th, the PM module of the Literature Keystones was administered on Thursday, January 18th, in the afternoon.

At the Pennsylvania Farm Show:

On January 8th, a group of students received awards at the Farm Show.

The following students received Keystone Degrees: Morgan Bear, Taylor Donovan, Conner Griffie, Cory Latchford, Olivia Monismith, Allyson Shively, and Becky Webster.

The following students were jacket recipients: Joshua Fertig, Elisabeth Girton, Hannah Varner, Chesnie Hosfelt, Abigail Beidel, Zoe Koser, Alexis Detwiler, Alexus Peters, Tyler Davis, Shelby McCullough, and Jacob Matthews

The Ag Issues Team received 3rd place.

The Window Display received 11th place.

On January 23, Big Spring's FFA hosted Mr. Appiah Boateng, the founder of 4-H in Ghana. They engaged in a discussion about the extension efforts and agricultural education in Ghana. Along with Mr. Boateng, 2 state FFA officers visited. This was a great experience for our students!

Dawg Pound will begin hosting the Winter sports senior nights.

Big Spring had 5 CPAVTS students participating in the Skills USA District Competition and the PA Farm Show.

Jarrett Blake, a junior, won 1st place in the HVAC category at the Skills USA District Competition.

Kyrsten Browne, a junior, won 2nd place in the Dental category at the Skills USA District Competition.

Anthony Cleary, a senior, received 1st place in the Electronics Technology category at the Skills USA District Competition.

Casey Hagmier, a junior, received 1st place for his wedding cake topper, 2nd place for his mixed herbs planter, and 5th place for his poinsetta all at the PA Farm Show.

Dalton Kiner, a junior, won 1st place in the Information Services Technology category at the Skills USA District Competition.

Senior, Emily Reifsnyder, entered 7 of her own pictures into the PA Farm Show. Out of those 7 photos, 6 of them won awards. Emily got 2 first place, 1 second place, 1 third place, and 2 fourth place awards. Congratulations to Emily for this great accomplishment!
