Welcome to 2023, we are your Kaitiaki Tama, Kingston Benton, and Kaitiaki Kotiro, Ella Rauputu.

It has been really awesome seeing all the smiley faces back at school.

We would like to thank the Home & School Committee for their fundraising efforts to heat our school pool. The kids have been loving swimming in a warmer pool.

About us:

Kingston - I am a Year 8 student and I have been at Puketapu School since 2020, when my family moved to Bell Block. I have two younger sisters, one that is in Miss Knuckeys class and the other one at Puketapu Kindy and will start at our school this year. Last year I was the Tech Leader and did the sounds and slideshows at our School Showcases. I also helped do this for our end of year SOMADD concert. My favourite thing about Puketapu school is how kind everyone is.

Ella - I am a Year 8 student and started at Puketapu in 2016 when I was 5, my first teacher was Mrs MacDonald. I have one younger brother in Matua Brody's class. Last year I was Sports Leader and was also in our performance group for Kapa Haka. My favourite thing about Puketapu School are the teachers, the kids, the energy, the EVERYTHING!

We are so excited for the year ahead and all the fun and learning that will be had.

Design Tech has kicked off this Term with a Smoothie Wero (challenge). There was lots of trialing different ingredients to get the best tasting smoothie.

Rimu also made a visit to the Design & Tech block to make playdough.

Orders are now open for Puketapu T-shirts and hoodies.

These are available to order directly through Game Changer (they even have Afterpay and Laybuy available).

ISSUE #1 IS OUT NOW!

We are doing things a bit differently this year in an effort to help reduce waste. We have reduced the number of Scholastic / Lucky Book Club pamphlets we receive and instead of giving these out to every student they are now held at the school office.

If your child would like to place a Lucky Book Club order, come to the office for the pamphlet and order online through The Loop https://mybookclub.scholastic.co.nz/Parent/Login.aspx or return your order to the office by Thursday 23 February.

This was penciled in for next week, but has been postponed and will now be held in a few weeks time. More information will come out next week.

Tōtara 4 and 5 are checking out the McDonald’s menu and looking at what they could get to eat for lunch if they had $5 to spend.

Congratulations to Taylor Harvey from Kauri 2 who has been selected as a Rotokare Youth Ambassador for the year!

Taylor had to complete an application process where he also had to create and share a portfolio on why he should become an Ambassador.

This programme is for environmentally savvy students in years 6, 7 and 8 who are passionate about learning, doing, and inspiring their peers in wildlife, environmental education, and community awareness, all as an advocate for Rotokare.

For one year, the chosen Ambassadors are invited to expand their role in conservation in a hands-on fun and inspiring environment at Rotokare. The programme includes:

• Nine unique Ambassador workshops covering different aspects of New Zealand biodiversity, environmental awareness, and science communication, to level up their field skills and know-how;
• Tour guide training for day and night tours;
• Chances to represent Rotokare at special events. Our Ambassadors have helped release toutouwai (North Island Robins), hihi (Stitchbirds), and other native wildlife, and have also engaged in peer education at EnviroSchool events!
• Networking opportunities, in meeting other Rotokare Ambassadors and wildlife experts, conservationists, and educators across Aotearoa
• Annual field trips to unique sanctuaries

Rotokare is a community-led conservation-based charitable trust in the heart of Taranaki - just east of Eltham.

As the kaitiaki of the beautiful Lake Rotokare and its environs, their primary focus is to achieve the highest level of restoration, protection, and enhancement of Rotokare's indigenous ecosystem. Our wetland and lowland forests are home to hundreds of native plants and threatened wildlife species including kiwi, hihi/stitchbird, tieke/saddleback, popokatea/whitehead, and toutouwai/North Island robins.

This magical natural environment today is so worth a visit. Your family will be amazed at the regenerating forest and abundant wildlife!

PLAYER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME

Our Player Development Programme is one of the first opportunities for learning coaches to get a head start in their season.

The programme provides coaches with session plans, equipment, venue, resources, and player talent.

Central Zone have four workshops available for the months of February & March 2023.

· How do we build effective relationships with players and parents, our schools, club and centre? (Player Centred Coaching)

· What vibe do you want to create in your team? (Planning)

UMPIRING

We have multiple Good Call Rules Workshops held throughout the year for those who are needing to learn or refresh on the rules of the game.

Our workshops are also a steppingstone in conjunction with Netball New Zealand’s learning to umpire module to become a registered umpire for Netball Taranaki.

The next two workshops are at the end of February, with venues in both Stratford and New Plymouth.

This is a great opportunity for both players and learning umpires to come along and learn some key umpire tools and tricks for the winter league.

L PLATE AND ROOKIE CAMP 2023

We have brough back our L plate and Rookie Camp for the 2023 season!

Our Rookie Camp is a weekend full of learning many aspects of umpiring including game management, rules, vision and NetballSmart. The camp is aimed at our umpires who have had some experience in the L plate programme and are ready to progress to 7-a-side games. This camp is run across the mountain alongside our preseason competition in April for new and learning umpires.

ROOKIE CAMP 2023

Please keep an eye out on our website and Facebook page for more information regarding Rookie Camp 2023.

Our L plate programme is a free weekly programme that runs alongside our FutureFERNS competition. Learner umpires are taken through basic theory of umpiring before they are assigned a buddy to assist them on court on a one-on-one basis. Our L plate umpires take on a ‘learn as you go’ approach to umpiring and wear a special yellow bib to identify them as part of the programme.

These programmes are designed to not only develop the fundamental umpiring skills but are also to ensure they have the best support on their pathway.

The Waitara kayak Club are holding introductory kayaking session in Term 1 2023. These are for participants over the age of 10 years old. No experience in kayaking is required - Kayaks, paddles and PDFs are provided and sessions are facilitated by CRNZ endorsed coaches.
