NESC Newsletter- September

Northeast North Elementary School is off to a "dino-mite" school year. The STEAM Transformation Room has been turned into a habitat fit for T-Rex, the King of Reptiles. Students have learned about the skills of paleontologists, museum curators, and architects of parks. Students have been busy looking for fossils (pasta) and recreating skeletons from their dig sites.

Additionally, they are working on designing their own Jurassic Parks using math concepts of area and perimeter. They will also code their robots "jeeps" to navigate through the park.

Students will also be creating books in our "Write Place" about dinosaurs and illustrating the books to share at our Authors Tea later in the school year.

We will have a "roar-some" time this year!

Mrs. Hunt's third grade at NEEE has been creating an interesting learning environment! They have added caterpillars, fish, and tadpoles to the room to care for and study!

Karsyn Redman brought in tadpoles so the class can witness their transformation into frogs. Mrs. Hunt brought in milkweed caterpillars so we can study the metamorphosis of a monarch butterfly!

The Northeast East Elementary Beta Club traveled to Nashville, TN this past summer to compete in the National Beta Convention held at the Opryland Hotel. We competed in a number of events, including Academics, Engineering, Visual Arts, Technology, and Robotics. It was a great experience and the kids were true Beta examples with their behavior and attitudes throughout the long, hectic day. Our very own Paisley Zink won 7th place in Photography overall! We are so proud of our Betas and all of their hard work!

This school year for Beta, our theme is Be the "I" in Kind. We are going to attempt to make a chain that goes around the entire school with acts of kindness that are performed and reported or seen by teachers throughout the year. We are also raising money for Christmas 4 Kids as our service project. Christmas 4 Kids is a local organization that helps provide Christmas to families in need throughout Sullivan County. Other community service projects we are involved in are helping serve at the Hymera Alumni Reunion and Seafood Festival, ringing the bell for the Salvation Army during the Christmas season, and helping set up the distribution center for Christmas 4 Kids.

We will be inducting 13 new members to our Elementary Club in September and are planning on attending and competing in the State Convention that will be held in Evansville on November 10-11.

Psssst…….Have you heard the news?

In case you haven’t heard, North Central has a brand new cafeteria and construction is almost complete! Connie, Jacob, Ben and Halee are so thankful that you have been patient with our progress and are looking forward to serving up some great meals. And the good news—all reimbursable meals are free this year! Through the CEP program, the Northeast School Corporation is able to offer free breakfast and lunch…..we just need YOU to come and join us!

Student participation is key to continuing to offer this program, so please check out the new cafeteria to see what we have to offer!

Thanks to 11 donors, including at least one parent, at least one of our speakers, and McKinley Trucking which just donated $186 to take us over the top plus over $500 matched by Mission Tiger, I am thrilled to report that we will be getting nearly $900 of new PE equipment to replace broken and worn-out equipment! This includes 30 new badminton rackets, 14 new pickleball paddles, throw-down bases, a new set of dodgeballs, and 2 nice kickballs. I am over the top happy!

We still have a long way to go to be where we should be, and we still need to get our equipment up here from Shelburn, but for now, I will celebrate this victory!

On Saturday, August 27, the North Central Jr Beta Club helped the Hymera Ruritan serve the 40th Annual Seafood Festival. Students breaded fish, served meals and drinks, cleaned tables, and took out trash. This is the 8th year the Beta's have helped the Ruritan serve during the Seafood Festival. The Jr Beta Club uses this as one of their several service projects throughout the year.

Can you first tell a little bit about yourself?

I am a wife and mother of two children. My oldest is Alex, and he is 18 years old. My youngest is Jayce, and he is 13. I have two dogs, Jack and Luna, who are my fur children. My hobbies include boxing and Krav Maga (form of self-defense). I graduated from Saint-Mary-Of-The- Woods College in 2016 with my undergraduate degree in psychology. I have worked as a trauma counselor and a school counselor for the past three years. I graduated from Indiana State University in May of this year with my masters degree in school counseling.

What brought you to North Central?

Last year I worked for Covington Community School Corporation. I was the Middle School Social Worker/ School Counselor. Covington was a far drive from my home each day. I wanted something a little closer to home so I could help take care of my parents and be more involved in school activities. I chose NC because it was close to home and allowed me to achieve the things I wanted.

What have you enjoyed about North Central so far?

The staff were very welcoming to me coming in on the first day of school. I feel like I have been here for a long time already. Coming into a new school I really hadn’t thought of expectations. I just wanted to get familiar with students and staff and base what I do on the needs I see. So far my experience has been wonderful.

What has your daily routine been so far here? Do you expect that to change at any point?

So far my daily routine is getting into the office looking over my to-do-list and starting with that. Most mornings I am in the hallway with students, greeting them as they walk down the hallway, even singing some mornings! I try to make myself visible every passing period so the students and staff can see me and feel more uncomfortable with me. After that I usually will follow my to-do list until a student needs me or I need to speak with a student. They always come first!

Have you been able to get into the classrooms yet? If so, what has been the primary focus?

I have been able to get into most of the junior high classes. The focus of this was so the students could play a Kahoot game and get to know me a little better. I feel that if the students know a few things about me and my role at NC, they will feel more comfortable coming to speak with me. I want the students to know that I am here to help them and that I care.

Do you have anything else you'd like to add?

I am enjoying my time getting to know the students and staff of NC. I am happy to be part of this team!

North Central HS will recognize this important event the week of September 5-9. As a school, let us join together in making strides toward saving lives and bringing hope, one step at a time, to those affected by suicide. During this week, several activities and discussions will help us learn how to spot warning signs in order to get someone the help they need.

NCHS Guidance

After serving as the corporation treasurer for 29 years, Vicki Huntsworth spent her final day on the job Thursday, September 1. Below is a picture of Vicki at her retirement party where many memories (and sweets) were shared! We wish Vikki a long, healthy, and well-deserved retirement!
