For the Week of February 26th - March 1st, 2024
Weekly Updates
Dear Hózhó Families,
PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES
Lower School (Grades K-6)
Please check your emails or texts for information from your child’s homeroom teacher on how to sign up for a spring conference. Teachers will be offering a variety of appointment times between now and spring break. If you have not heard from your teacher by March 1st and would like to schedule a conference, please call the front desk at 722-8922.
Upper School (Grades 7th-10th)
On March 7th, parents may come and meet with teachers from 8:30 am-4 pm.
March 8th is by appointment only. Teachers will be offering a variety of appointment times between now and spring break. If you have not heard from your teacher by March 1st and would like to schedule a conference, please call the front desk at 722-8922.
Read-A-Thon - The Readathon begins on March 1. Students may dress as a Dr. Suess character on that day. Please set up your child's account online with the paperwork provided by your child's homeroom or English teacher. The Readathon is our big fundraiser for the year. This year we particularly need your support. As you may recall, we implemented transportation this year and we received no funding for that program until next year. The readathon fundraiser is critical. Please do all you can to support it.
The first step is to set up your child's page and post on Facebook if you have access. All students who have their accounts set up by March 1st will receive pickles and popcorn on Friday, March 1st. Encourage your child to read, log his or her minutes, or notify their teacher of the minutes. Also, please reach out to family and friends here in Gallup or anywhere in the country to sponsor your child's reading. Sponsors get to put special messages online for your child and those are fun to read. Also, your child can earn prizes both in the program online and at the school.
Upcoming Career Day - Career Day for grades K-6 will be held on Friday, May 17th. If you would like to be a career day presenter, please email Mrs. Tanner, atanner@hozhoacademy.org
Kindergarten Enrollment - Kindergarten enrollment for the 2024-25 school year starts February 1st. Please share this info with friends or family who may wish to enroll. If you have a sibling to enroll, please visit the website between Feb 1-29, 2024, to complete the Letter of Intent to Enroll documentation. Even though siblings have priority, the spot could go to another student if we do not have enrollment documentation filled out. Enrollment and Lottery Information - Hózhó Academy (hozhoacademy.org)

Art Class Highlight
First Grade
First grade is learning about texture. They learned about the differences between actual texture and implied texture. This week they got to touch many various objects and describe how they felt in their hands. Then they drew on watercolor paper with crayons, so that it would show the actual texture of the surface while they drew. They had fun!
Sixth Grade
Sixth grade is working on a still-life drawing. They are learning the classical steps of drawing from life. This week they did their "envelope drawing" which is a preliminary sketch to map out the entire layout and confine it within one large blocky shape. From this, they "block-in" individual shapes and then make a contour drawing. They will be working on this unit for a few more weeks. Stay tuned for updated pictures of their drawings.

Literacy Corner by Elise Farrel
This week's literacy corner is dedicated to Leap Year! Special days and holidays are a great way to get your child excited to read, as well as expand their knowledge! Reading about real-world people, places and events helps our students make sense of the world all the while seeing the purpose of reading and developing stronger readers. In making connections between the world and a book, children are more likely to retain information. They can even retain information about places they have never been and people they have never met! Here are a few suggestions for Leap Day books to help start the conversation about this special day;
