North High Newsletter
May 2024
From the Principal
Greetings Viking Families,
We are down to the last 18 days of school (8 for seniors). Please encourage students to finish strong. There is still time to get work done, raise grades and earn credits. Spring sports and activities are wrapping up. We are proud of all that our students have accomplished!
As the school year comes to a close, speak with your students about behavior expectations. We do not want students to make impulsive decisions that have a lasting impact on their educational journey. Safety continues to be our top priority and we need everyone to be their best selves and make a positive contribution to our school community. Now more than ever it is important to Be a Viking—Be Responsible, Respectful, and Accountable!
Thank you to all who have completed the Culture and Climate Survey for Families. If you have not done so, the link is included below. Your input helps us grow and improve our service to the Viking Community.
Please review the newsletter to celebrate student excellence and explore employment and enrichment opportunities over the summer. We look forward to honoring the graduating class of 2024 on May 23rd at 2pm at Baxter Arena. The live stream link for the event is included below. We will share it via social media, the school website, and email as the event grows closer.
Although, there are 9 great options, we truly believe North High is the #Place2Be! As always, we thank you for your continued support and involvement in the Viking Community. If you have any questions, please call us 531-299-2700.

Look at These Great Vikings!
IncluCity 2024
With seventeen students in attendance, the Vikings were the largest group in attendance at the 2024 IncluCity retreat in Ashland, NE. The sixteen delegates, and one counselor in training, worked with others from across Nebraska, South Dakota, and western Iowa to confront bigotry, prejudice, and discrimination. Be on the lookout for information about Omaha North’s new IncluCity Club where students hope to dismantle stereotypes, build lasting cross-cultural relationships, learn ways to peacefully resolve conflict, and become allies for one another.
North Alum Giving Back
North alum Radell ('10) and Janique ('08) came back to talk to seniors about the Growing Home program through the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce which connects diverse students with mentors, internships and career opportunities while in college!
Brigade Cadet Challenge
The 3rd Annual Brigade Cadet Challenge competition was held at Benson High School with nine JROTC programs competing. The competition included sit-ups, pull-ups, standing long jump, one-mile run, 50-yard dash, and the shuttle-run. Two North cadets earned medals for their high scores: L-R Jazmin M, took the 5th Place Varsity Female medal and Alex J. took overall honors as the First-Place Varsity male medal against 100 other competitors.
JROTC Archery Team
The North JROTC Archery Team (Alex J. -Team Captain, Marcus T., Xavier H., Victor I., Mariah T. -Team Co-Captain, A'Laiah T., Vin M., David D., and Andre T. Luke B., Eliah R. and Adyn R) celebrates their victory in the annual National Archery in Schools Program (NASP) sponsored competition. This was the first year of the competition and teams competed weekly by shooting from 8 and 10 meters. Each cadet fired a total of 30 arrows at those distances and earned as many as 10 points per arrow. A perfect score was 300 and our cadets averaged 267 points.
Women in Science Conference @ UNL
One hundred students from across Nebraska representing 22 high schools, including 3 students from North High, attended this conference in April. Female scientists and students from UNL volunteered to serve as panelists, give workshops, labs, and mentor conference participants. Highlights of the conference included a tour of the Nebraska Innovation Campus, where students explored the Makerspace, greenhouse and food innovation center; STEM-related labs and workshops with hands-on activities in the Beadle Center and departments across the university; and visits with UNL faculty, undergraduates and graduate women students in science-related areas of study.
The students heard from panelists and successful female science faculty, who described their career paths and how to prepare for a science career. These scientists represented a diverse array of science careers including animal science, biological sciences, geology, entomology, chemistry, public health professions. The keynote speakers, Dr. Georgia Jones (associate professor and Food Specialist focused on food safety and sanitation) and Dr. Judy Wu-Smart (UNL researcher in pollinator health and director of the UNL Bee Lab), participated in a fireside chat moderated by Jocelyn Bosley (research impact coordinator with the UNL Office of Research).
Letters About Literature
Congratulations to Aidan B., who was the alternate winner for the high school level of the 25th annual Letters About Literature competition! Young Nebraska writers who wrote winning letters in this competition attended a proclamation signing ceremony on 4/11 with Gov. Jim Pillen.
AP Research
AP Capstone is a diploma program from the College Board based on two yearlong AP courses: AP Seminar and AP Research. Omaha North’s first cohort of students just completed year two of the program. In their AP Research course, students implemented a yearlong investigation where they gathered research, met with expert advisors, and collected data to deeply explore academic topics of individual interest. We are incredibly proud of these dedicated students for completing this intense course load.
