The 22-23 school year is upon us! Please be sure you have assigned all of your students to your caseloads as this will give us an accurate student count. Also, be sure you have met with all general education teachers and documented they are aware of the accommodations.

Kandee Shelor - Transition Coordinator

My name is Kandee Shelor. I hold both a Bachelors and Masters of Science degree from Radford University in Communication Sciences and Disorders. I have worked for 25 years as a Speech Language Pathologist in a variety of settings with my most recent as an SLP in Florence 1 Schools. In my free time I love to spend time with my family! We are usually found at a baseball game, the beach, or just cooking out on the back deck. I also enjoy reading a good book in my free time. I love being able to open up doors of opportunity for the amazing students I am so fortunate to work with through the Program for Exceptional Children in F1S.

Amber Christy - Compliance Monitor

My name is Amber Christy, I worked in Florence One Schools for several years prior to returning this year. After earning my Master of Arts in Teaching and Bachelor of Science in Biology from Francis Marion University, I served as Academic Coach and special education teacher. In addition to my primary job functions, I was recognized as Clinical Practicum advisor at Francis Marion University, patient relations liaison at McLeod Regional Hospital and STEAM and English Immersion Instructor, in Shijiazhuang, China. In my free time, I enjoy playing tennis, learning new languages, travel and cooking. I am excited and humbled to serve F1S in the role of Compliance Monitor.

Tywanda Bailey - Compliance Monitor

My name is Tywanda Bailey and this is my first year with F1S. My educational background includes degrees from the University of South Carolina, Francis Marion University, and Gardner-Webb University. I previously worked for Darlington County School District. I love spending time with my family and friends during my free time. I like working for the Programs for Exceptional Children because of the relationships that you build with children and families because you service the whole student.

Movement Breaks for Focus & Attention

Are your student's struggling with sitting still? Do they get antsy and you find yourself redirecting more than you would like? Most of us actually do struggle with staying seated in one spot for an extended period of time.


Have you considered making movement breaks part of your daily routine? Utilizing a variety of intentional movement opportunities throughout the day will teach student's self-regulation and many times increase their focus and attention to task.


In this blog post from The Inspired Treehouse Pam Braley explains,

"Kids need to move! The vestibular system is the sensory system that processes and controls movement. The “control panel” that helps kids understand balance, posture, a sense of upright positioning, and alertness in response to movement is located in the inner ear. Guess how this system is activated? BY MOVEMENT, of course!"
