The Hawks Soar
December 2022 Edition
HMS Families,
We have noticed a few trends related to student Chromebooks and purposely damaging/breaking their screen. Insurance does not cover this purposeful device damage and is vandalism to school property. Students and families will be responsible for replacement and/or repair costs in these instances. Please be sure the device is taken care of!
The end of the 2nd nine weeks is upon us! With the end of the first semester at HMS comes the excitement of the holiday season and the New Year. As we end 2022, I sincerely hope our students, staff, and faculty finish on a solid note and push themselves to be even stronger in 2023! The second semester is also a fresh start as we work to make the most of the opportunities we are presented with.
Other important information is noted below, including, but not limited to:

eLearning 1/2 Days
With our scheduled eLearning ½ days (3/22/23, and 5/2/23), students will be picked up by the bus for school at their normal time; car riders can be dropped off at their normal time, and our doors will open at their normal time of 7:30 am. We will be serving breakfast. Classes will begin at their normal time of 7:40 am. Each student will have the option to eat lunch at school before leaving – lunch for our MS students will be served around 9:45 am, with the cafeteria having limited options. Students will be dismissed at 11:10 am. Busses will transport students home, students who are walkers will walk home, and for students who are picked up, arrangements should be made for pick up at dismissal time by Door D. Students will learn asynchronously (eLearning) while they are home in the afternoon and will have assignments for hours 5, 7, and 8 posted on Google Classroom by noon to complete. No assignments will be posted for study hall/SRT or Team-Time class. Staff will be available via email from noon - 2:35 pm. Assignments will be due the following academic day or at the teacher’s discretion.
Weather-Related Cancellations
Traditional eLearning Days:
With our winter months ahead, we are bound to have days where weather/road conditions will force us to cancel school. Indiana legislation has put a maximum number of days we are only allowed to have three (3) asynchronous (eLearning) days for inclement weather days. The first three inclement weather cancellations will be made up asynchronously. Students will have recorded instruction and/or assignments for all class periods posted on Google Classroom by 9 am to complete. No assignments will be posted for study hall/SRT or Team-Time class. During asynchronous learning, students will work independently whenever it fits best into their schedule. Staff will be available via email from 9 am - 2:35 pm. Assignments will be due the following academic day or at the teacher’s discretion.
Synchronous Learning Days:
Any days canceled after we use our three eLearning cancellations, MSD of Boone Township has the option to conduct learning for the day synchronously. Synchronous learning will be done via live instruction via Google Meet. Students must follow their class schedule, get online during specific times, and join their teacher's live interaction and instruction via Google Meet. Students must arrive at the Google Meet on time, be able to participate in their daily education, answer questions when the teacher asks, and be present until the teacher excuses students for the class period, just as they would in a normal, in-person classroom environment. Students will not meet during their study hall/SRT or Team-Time class. Students should work as they would during a traditional school day. If possible, students should have a designated work area free of disruptions to ensure their attention is on what our staff is teaching. Assignments will be due the following academic day or at the teacher’s discretion. Staff will be available during live instruction and then thereafter until 2:35 pm.
The schedule for a synchronous learning day is below:
Reading Block / Careers 7:40 am - 7:55 am (15 Minutes)
1st Hour 8:00 am - 8:25 am (25 Minutes)
2nd Hour 8:30 am - 8:55 am (25 Minutes)
3rd Hour 9:00 am - 9:25 am (25 Minutes)
4th Hour 9:30 am - 9:50 am (20 Minutes)
5th Hour 9:55 am - 10:20 am (25 Minutes)
6th Hour XXXXXXXXX
7th Hour 10:30 am - 10:55 am (25 Minutes)
8th Hour 11:00 am - 11:25 am (25 Minutes)
We plan to utilize our traditional eLearning and makeup days before choosing the synchronous learning option, but this type of learning is an option on inclement weather days. Please know the synchronous learning days will be a learning opportunity for our district. We will adapt as we see fit, and as always, we appreciate your unwavering support!

Dress Code
Please be reminded of the MSD of Boone Township student dress code. The policy can be found on pages 56 and 57 in the Universal Student Handbook. I’ve also attached our policy below:
Parents/guardians must ensure that students come to school properly groomed and dressed. Proper attire is defined as clothing that is clean, modest, which does not create a health or safety hazard, and which is not distracting or demeaning to other students in the classroom.
School attire should conform to the following guidelines that are not intended to be all-inclusive. The administration reserves the right to use its discretion in determining the type of clothing appropriate for the school setting.
Students are to abide by the following:
• All students must wear soled shoes at all times. Elementary students are not allowed to wear high heels.
• Any clothing exposing the torso, such as ripped shirts, tops that are torn or meant to expose bare midriffs, barebacks, low necklines, as well as those that are strapless and see-through, are not permitted. Pants, skirts, and shorts must completely cover undergarments.
• Shorts and skirts must be long enough to enable stair-climbing, sitting, and participating in any school activity without the possibility of undergarment exposure.
• Clothing with unacceptable writing or pictures will not be allowed. This includes anything advertising drugs, tobacco, alcohol, vulgarities, nudity, sex, weapons, criminal activity, gang activity, or is contrary to the school’s mission.
• No wearing of hats or coats in the building without prior administrative permission. Hoodies are not to be worn on the head. No outerwear is allowed in the classroom unless extenuating circumstances dictate.
• Students are not to wear objects that could be used as weapons such as chains etc.
• Clothing must be in good repair

Hawk Trip Criteria
The middle school staff has end-of-the-quarter activities, and this year we’d like to make these activities extra special, one which students earn. Students will be able to participate in all areas each grading period and earn points in each category. The middle school staff has adopted and slightly modified a program that incorporates five areas we want to emphasize as making a more complete or successful student: scholarship, citizenship, attendance, extracurricular activities, and service.
Scholarship – Students get points for having no grade below a C- each grading period; however, 2 more F’s automatically disqualify you from attending the HAWK trip.
Attendance – Perfect or near-perfect attendance (maximum of 2 absences per grading period or 2 tardies). Attendance is determined by school records and can be reviewed by the school administration.
Citizenship – Students will automatically earn their citizenship points unless they have received more than 1 detention. Suspensions and expulsions automatically disqualify from the HAWK trip.
Extracurricular Activities – This category includes teams, clubs, and school academic competitions offered here at Hebron Middle School. ONLY school-sanctioned activities count for this program (exceptions will be allowed for exceptional circumstances). You are only allowed one point total, regardless of the number of activities you are involved in during a grading period.
Service – Students are encouraged to participate in community service and return a signed paper from the event organizer for points. These points may need to be confirmed by the staff.
Students who earn four out of five points from the categories above will be eligible for the Hawk Trip for each quarter. Team-time teachers oversee this program.
Extracurricular Grade Policy
Students participating in extracurricular events (sports or clubs) must be in good standing. Those participating in clubs or sports at Hebron Middle School will be subject to a grade check every two weeks (Fridays). Students who have a failing grade will immediately become ineligible for the club/sport they’re participating in until the next grade check. This also applies to the end of each grading period. Students with two or more failing grades at the end of a grading period will be ineligible for the next 9-week.
Grade check for Q3 will be as follows:
Friday, January 20, 2023
Friday, February 3, 2023 (Mid-term of Q3)
Friday, February 17, 2023
Friday, March 3, 2023
Coaches/club supervisors reserve the right to remove athletes from practice and contests if their academic progress is unsatisfactory. Additionally, athletes/club members may be removed from a team/club due to poor academic performance. Removal from any team for any reason requires approval by the Athletic Director.
Every student-athlete, manager, trainer, or support group member is subject to this rule. Those affected may attend practices during the period of ineligibility at the coach’s discretion.

NWI Buddy Bags
We will be continuing (first delivery is tentatively planned for September 2) our partnership with NWI No Child Hungry. This program, called Buddy Bags, provides for students in need who are enrolled at MSD of Boone Township, free of charge. Buddy Bags are eligible for students who may be at risk of not having enough food to eat on the weekend. At the end of each week (normally placed in their locker on Thursday after school hours), your student will receive a bag of non-perishable, single-serve, child-friendly food to bring home. The food bags will be handed out discreetly and in a caring manner. Your participation is anonymous to our organization. Only your child’s school will have your information.
If you are in need of this program, please fill out the Google Form that is linked below.
