Dear Families,

At Sunset one of our guiding principles is to cultivate a sense of belonging. Recently we have been doing some work with our students on better understanding what does it mean to belong. I thought you would enjoy seeing this video created by our kids! It was also shared at our recent School Board Presentation hosted at Sunset on February 22nd.

Whether it's greeting someone with a smile, ensuring safe drop off and pick up procedures, seeking to understand all the information of a situation and asking yourself are my words helpful and kind can go a long way! Hello Sunset Families,

Your child’s safety is a primary concern for all of us. We share your hope that children learn and grow in a safe and secure learning environment. Every year throughout the Cheney School District, students from kindergarten to fifth grade are taught the district’s Personal Safety curriculum.

During the next several weeks, I will be giving a series of short lessons centering on aspects of Personal Safety. These lessons will include maintaining safety with strangers and friends (early warning signs & keeping secrets), recognizing appropriate and inappropriate touch, saying “No!” to inappropriate touching, and identifying sources of help and support available to children (safety network). The books listed below are materials used in the classroom, for grades K-2. Grades 3rd-5th will be utilizing PowerPoints and discussion based on NetSmartz curriculum.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at 509-559-4634. If you still have concerns about your child’s participation in this curriculum, you do have the right to have your child “opt out,” However, we ask that you notify us of your decision by Monday, 3/13/2023 so we can make alternative plans for your child/children while the curriculum is being taught in the classroom. As always, don’t hesitate to call with any questions you might have.
